Have you fitted the coolant temp sensor and crank sensor? assuming neither helped? Also thinking of packing mine off to APi if I can't work it out!

Other things I have yet to fit are - New throttle body + position sensor, new PCV, and then cleaning of the IACV with new gasket

Have the same problem with my Bugeye Sti!

When I leave work at 4pm it turns over for about 7 seconds before it fires up.

Done the "stick on the throttle" trick as per John D as the car had the same issue again today.
Will report back in couple of days.

So far I've had the following done:

New Walboro 255 fuel pump
New genuine crank sensor
New Coil pack
New genuine Coolant Temp sensor
New genuine Lambda
New genuine throttle body + position sensor
New genuine PCV valve
Cleaned IACV and fitted new genuine gasket
Map has been looked at twice now.

.........and its still struggles and starts rough when cold, albeit intermittently. Some days it will be fine - usually when the outside temp is not as cold.

So now I have given up. Stick on throttle didn't work either

Not sure what else I can check - Map sensor maybe?

Tried most if not all and more of the above, narrowed it down to leaking injector???

Reason for this is that dependnding on the stroke position the engine stops the bore can fill with fuel and have the starting issues and the little puff of blue smoke is from bore wash due to the fuel if the engine stops on top part of the stroke seems fine.
Just need to find which one of the four or could be more than one!

I have something for you to try.. and anyone else who has this problem currently, as I've had 6 spot on cold starts in a row now by doing this which is unusual!

So ignition on, prime fuel pump, DON'T start car, instead switch the ignition off, then back on again and prime the pump for a second time, now start..

I'd be interested to hear how people get on with the above..
This works for me,priming several times or i just tiggle the accelerator when cranking it the second time if i forgot to prime and it fails the first time. Mine is only intermittent too though. I think it could possibly be down to injector leak, like mentioned in post above this ^ and depending what stroke engine stops on and what injector it is etc.

+ 1 for the cold start issue with an sti-bug. Coughing and spluttering before begrudgingly
Starting. Don't fancy replacing every sensor with no avail. Sometimes it cold starts on the button, although anything more than two cold days then you're struggling.

My 2002 bug sti has done exactly this several times, always turns out to be a mapping issue. You should have it checked over by your mapper.

While we're on the subject of mapping, I wonder if it's the map which, when in 6th gear floored going up through 69/70/80 mph it feels a bit lumpy, with occasional bumps in the power band?

Thought maybe it was the battery so bought the most powerful one from Halfords, now I wonder if it's being charged by the alternator properly?

I did wonder if maps need tweaking after a while?

When I was fitting the new PAS pump yesterday I removed the alternator to find this:

Pretty sh@gged wires on the coolant temp sensor connector, and on the one next to it, plus the connector itself was broken, so there was no clip securing it all together. The wires as you can see are also split, and these were seriously corroded, to the point where they literally broke off when I moved them..

Luckily I still had my generic Lambda (threw up CEL so replaced with Bosch) which uses the same small wire connections that sit inside the plastic connector, so I cut off a small length and removed them and got some crimp connectors to re-attach them.

Not the neatest job I know, but this is all I can do without replacing the entire loom. Going to pick up a spare connector later today.

Anyway I'm wandering if the poor cold starting I was having, could have had anything to do with this? The wires were so corroded that I'm surprised any signal could be read by the ECU?

Could well be the cause indeed! I've experience with other cars that were hard to start due to the coolant sensor. Hopefully that'll be you sorted!

Picked up a new plastic connector from a loom, fitted everything back together, fired it up...........and ITS FIXED! WOO HOO!

Fired up perfectly, no spluttering or rough idle, starts absolutely spot on!

Will keep it monitored but for now it appears to be fixed - happy days

It's been a week with the stick on the throttle trick and yesterday back to normal turning over for some time then spluttered into life.
So took the old girl out and gave her a good run and clear out, today started on the button!
Done this before, next my try some fuel system cleaner?
Don't have the same issue with Ecu coolant sensor wiring and went over all the connections and ok also checked the sensor reading back to the ecu with calibrated meter and reading the same so that's ruled out.

Edit: Noted when I checked my oil also is does smell a lot of fuel???
It's not due an oil change for another 3k, only done 2k ago

How's the car been since you replaced the coolant temp sensor CutMasterT ? Mine has developed exactly the same problem but only since leaving the car standing over this last weekend - curiously the alternator belt was replaced last week during the Major Service, so I wonder if removing the alternator has triggered some issue with the coolant temp sensor / wiring ?

Try a cam sensor and also check the live feed on wiring to the tank when key is turned

The car starts fine at the end of the working day when it's been sat in the sun ... seems to be in the morning when it's been sat in the garage overnight, or in the shade.

Hi Jonny my car is in storage so haven't been able to test it other than when I fixed the cts wiring.
I'll be taking it out next month when I'm back from Italy and I'll update this thread with the results.

It's bloody frustrating, especially since I've owned a faultless bugeye wagon for the last 7 yrs; never expected anything like this on my new Hawkeye.

Still having this problem and notice that even when starting from warm (as in after the car has been sitting for 30 mins), it starts okay but until being driven for a minute or so it's pretty grumbly, as in a quick press of the pedal and the Rev needle doesn't go up that smoothly. (Making me think it's fuel) Also if I drive the car on the motorway in 5th gear and floor it then it is lumpier up through the revs than if I tickle the turbo in, so maybe a map issue? Don't know what to think, after seeing what you guys have replaced it seems that there is no obvious answer and it's obviously a hard one for a garage to diagnose, especially with the weather improving. Our biggest worry is if it won't start at all, although I have not seen this happen anywhere this thread yet???

A bad batch of fuel did cross my mind too - I filled the tank full (vPower) last Friday before letting it sit over the weekend, then come first thing Monday morning I experience the issue. That said, it wouldn't explain how it starts fine at the end of the working day, but touch wood it has behaved again over these last two days.

The worrying thing is that all the time it starts (eventually or ok the button) I don't feel that I want to surrender the car again for probably a week and maybe with no result

Yeah, lol. Actually the car works just fine, apart from the hoses (which I should have replaced when the top hose went), it's just general 14 year-old car problems.
