Rik,
Don't train through it. Your muscles haven't fully recovered if they still ache, and you'll be overtraining them.
Three times a week should be enough. Stick to basic movements like bench press, chins (or pulldowns if you can't lift your body weight yet), curls, tricep extensions, shoulder press, squats, leg extensions and calf raises.
Most people split it into legs, chest and arms, back shoulders and triceps. I've generally got better results from higher reps, but aim for about 8-12 reps per set, 4-5 sets per exercise.
The biggest single difference between those who make progress and those who don't in a gym is in my opinion INTENSITY.
You can't fake that - if you're looking at the honeys around you while you're training, it probably won't ever happen.
Outside the gym, get enough rest, and most importantly, eat!![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Good luck!

Bin,
Bodybuilders Homos ?
I think you should take a visit to your local gym (the proper one, not the one for bored housewifes and Audi TT drivers on the way home type place) and discuss your theory.
What used to make me laugh was pimply 6 stone 18 year olds coming in the Gym (and bear in mind it was a hardcore kind of place) and buying sixty quids worth of supplements on day 1, they all had little gloves, weightbelts and baggies which made them look like bodybuilders with all the air let out, and then the little gimps would start mithering the monsters for training tips (some were happy for the attention and others really were not) and asking them about where they could get Steroids, asking a natrual bodybuilder that can sometimes illicit a negative reaction !
Some of the ones I spoke to were thick, very thick but a lot were very bright as well, a bit like the rest of society. One thing I did notice was that the steroid users were far less amiable and more furtive, very cliquey. A definite 'attitude' came through, the question "Have you done on there mate" had only one acceptable answer. The Roid heads were some of the most miserable looking blokes I have ever seen and they did fart a lot, you knew which set of equipment they had last used.

That may explain it, protein power, explains the cloud of white powder that jets out as well.
Take you point about not advertising it, they cant have been talking about it all the time, anyway, they always went into the car park as the management wouldnt put up with dealing on the prems
Does it make you more aggresive ?
I cant afford it anyway and I have Stella to make me more aggressive.

When, my err friend tried the gear, it definitely made him more aggressive. Not to the extent of wanting to rip peoples heads off for no reason but the kind of tolerating fools badly you get when when very tired.
On the plus side it helps you move the iron by making you mentally more "Grrrrrr". If that makes any sense? What my frined found
was that i helped you get those extra few failure reps out by directing that slightly agro'd grrr towards the weight you were lifting/pushing.
Like you I just agro these days from Stella, especially on an empty stomach!

Agression (problems??) dont affect all steriod users, steriods are like alcahol, different effects on different people, its as simple as that.
Protein and farting, tell me about it! ... i normally use high quality pure whey isolate, i`ve just bought some cheaper stuff this last week as i`m skint .... and i`ve not stopped fekkin` farting since!
Reminds me of an advert i once read ... "Does your protein give you excess muscle or excess wind??" ... hehe
To get the free needles you have to register yourself as been a regular drug user.

I reckon you dont always realise about the attitude/agrresion till you look back in hinde site.
I remember "my friend" being aware of waiting to see if this happened, thinking it didnt, and then months later realising it did.
If that makes sense?

Finally a weapon against my brothers farting tallents....protein whey ![Big Grin](images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
I've tried dropping the reps and putting the weight up the last few days and feel good for it. My muscles don't hurt despite being worked to destruction and I was quite please with the wieght I was actually able to shift. Will stick with that for a few weeks to see how I get on and then maybe mix it up a little again.
cheers for all the advice and thoughts

Chris B,
Hard to tell with a resistance machine like that. Basically you can have the same sort of machine in 4 different gyms made by 4 different companies .. what you can press probably differs by quite a sizeable amount.
What you can shift with a standing squat with free weights is probably more useful.
Oh and if anybody looking for tips is reading, if you can press 150 odd kg's on the machine pictured .. do not, repeat, do not, load a free weights bar with 150 kg's and try to press it. You will crumple into a very small heap![Wink](images/smilies/wink.gif)

Oh, v interesting doofus.
Just going to start a few free weights now a mate has joined the same place I go to.
Ta for the warning - I can do 2 x 15 at 180 or 190kg on the Technogym kit above.

ChrisB,
Leg presses are a poor substitute for squats, imo. But they're useful on days when you're not feeling 100%, as they are unquestionably a lot safer.
I've never tried to see how much i can max leg press, but generally use something in the region of 220kg on a basic 45 degree setup. By comparison, on squats a working weight is 140kg, heavy days 160kg and on very low rep days 180kg. But you do need a spotter you can trust with that much weight on a free bar.

I would also suggest if your going to start squatting free weights (once your up around 100 odd kg's) get a good weights belt, I always thought they were a bit 'matcho' when I started training but if your squatting heavy-ish they support your lower back.
It won't help you shift more weight but will help take the strain and may improve your technique a bit.
I would build up v. slowly as with all weight training good technique is FAR more important than a bigger weight and poor form.
I squat sets of around 130 on an average day, up to 150 if feeling 'on form'. I'd assume the 'bigger' guys will be up at around 180-200 easy?

One word of warning about weight belts. Don't start wearing one too early and getting used to it as it will cause your lower abs to get weaker and could result in injury at some point. It's always best to try and squat, deadlift or good morning without a belt when the weight is lightso that your muscles get used to bearing the weight and not the belt taking some of it.
Lower back injuries are caused more aften than not due to weak abs and the lumbar having to compensate for this.
