All you guys above are right, doesn't take a second to answer one of the million calls he gets from me or Kyle. Its the ignorance of that which winds me up the most!
From what I read further on with that facebook bit I posted on here, there seems to be a fair few more turbos. Even talk of a car and cash!! I mean it could be rubbish, but right now I believe those first not the guy that has been doing this since February.

Kyle, how are you getting on? Yet again John has failed to deliver the turbo when he said he would.
I will soon have to report the theft of my turbo and let the long process begin as this is going nowhere

(Presumably the turbo back working ?)
The next thing then is - what is stopping that happening?
This depends upon your view:
- Some have said they think it's personal circumstances;
- Some think it lack of organisation, poor communication etc;
- Some think it's bordering on criminal.
You then have to take the appropriate action.
If you get the wrong end of the stick you take inappropriate action and all hell can break loose - and you end up no better off, possibly worse.
It seems to me that this trader didn't have whatever problems until a point in time, which implies that something has happened.
I know only too well what happens when businesses get into a bit of a pickle (seen it lots of times), things get put off, calls and messages increase (but not extra business, complaints, which then take time to sort out, less time to actually do the jobs which bring the money in and it just goes round and round in a vicious spiral).
I'm guessing here that this particular person might have reached the point where instead of looking upon a call as new business they now dread the phone ringing because it will be someone else that they've let down.
It certainly doesn't help when their previous good name is now being trashed on the internet. (NOTE - I'm looking at this from their viewpoint, and most certainly NOT criticising you or anyone else, because I and probably everyone else understands how you feel).
Basically they've retreated into their shell. So, is there perhaps someone who knows the guy personally, or who could make personal contact - and more to the point is there an SN Member who can help fellow members out - who would act as a go-between, and enable you to see what the problem actually is, so you can take what you think is the right course of action?
If not I can only suggest that you make a personal appearance, find out the circumstances yourself and then whatever they are leave the premises, think about it and then do whatever you decide.
Remember, you need to take the best route to achieving your aim.
As for the trader, imo this is the best place to start sorting things out. This is a site for like-minded and generally mature people (we all get a bit het up at times) and there's a chance that once they know the circumstances people will be supportive, and the chances are that's what is needed right now.
It's the not knowing that is toxic, it produces caustic comments (which in the circumstances can't be seen to be unfair).
I'd love to see the op post 'right, I've been in contact and although I'm annoyed that it's taken so long to get in touch I understand the problems and we've come to an acceptable arrangement'.
And of course it would be nice for X to post 'I've come to an agreement with (op) and will be doing all I can to sort out any other problems over the next few months'.

I completely agree with everything you have said and I have looked upon this like that and thought of every possible action.
I believe as you mentioned it was personal circumstances that sunk the business and then it escalated from there. But now its turned into many people being owed turbos and other things.
After numerous attempts at getting the turbo back, the last communication via a Facebook slating he took from many people was that "Neil your turbo will be there Monday" that was last week.
Obviously no replies to calls or texts, the only reason I got a reply on Facebook is because about 10 other people were asking where there stuff was and being very vocal of their thoughts of him.
My only option from now is to go to Scotland, and see if my turbo is there. Then of course I'd need to get it tested as it may or may not work.
But all I actually wanted after it went back the second time was a dam refund!
Once is a mistake, twice and something is definitely wrong. So I bought a decent turbo that actually works.

I think the annoying thing is that the person whom the OP sent the turbo to is still on several other Subaru Forums and this makes people annoyed that they are being "ignored"
Whilst I am sure there is no underhandedness on Johns part - it is easy to see why people get annoyed.

Yes I agree, I don't know him personally and he does seem a good guy. But what do I know since I only know him over the phone.
I see lots of other activity from John, but a complete blank of me and others he owes stuff too.
If my turbo is ready to be sent back as he said many times, why can't he just pop it in the post.... it takes 5 minutes?

A generous chap from another forum went round to Johns house for me this weekend and despite John being aware he was coming, he wasn't home.
His wife/partner however was - explained that the house was just full of turbochargers in various states of repair and couldn't possibly identify mine.
He knew I had a guy coming round, and still the turbo wasn't boxed up and clearly marked ready to go?
Unfortunately the chap who went round for me was only in Scotland for work - and has since returned home.
If any Edinburgh people are up for it on ScoobyNet, we just need somebody local to keep sticking their nose in until John is home I think!
I'm going to start researching the appropriate legal action for my return to the UK in November. I'm collecting a lot of moneys' worth of parts to go with this Turbo, and can't hold my project up for much longer - but 700quid is a lot to write off.

I am sure I have seen one of these particular 'modified' turbos send the wheel retainer nut straight through the housing towards the engine lol... even if you do get back it will probably be very sub standard and not make the power or cope with the extra demands being placed on it

Here's an interesting point - how does he check the turbo impellor shaft for balance? If he cannot bench test them properly for a sustained period of use then you are taking a BIG risk with the health of your engine.
I suspect he buys the components required and then just builds / throws the turbochargers together, you stand more chance of success in a game of Russian Roulette.
I think he's one man who's become too big too quickly, got drowned in work and rather than be truthful and tell people how things are he's chosen to lie and attempt to bullsh1t his way out of a problem of his own making.

Well I'm not sure what changed, but my Turbo arrived this week...
It does indeed seem to have a new compressor wheel, so I suppose this chapter is now closed.
Best of luck to everybody else still waiting on parts or money

Same Joe, really no idea what changed to make it get in the post - but glad to see it!
Got a full diary this weekend, though may be able to squeeze a brew in on Saturday morning?!
Blyton on Sunday... you going to come watch?! Jim is attending in whatever his latest car is

Give me a bell Saturday pal. Regards Sunday I don't think I'll be going, I was offered a double drive too! I wouldn't have gone to spectate anyway. I've got a mega busy weekend, off to collect a trailer from Grantham on the Sunday anyway. Now I've been paid out for the mx5 I'm on the hunt for a track car. Jim will be taking the 106 surely?

Still nothing from John, a few it's in the post bull**** messages though as per.
He is however enjoying himself I can see on other sites where I like to keep track of the "reasons" why my turbo has still not returned.
Fonzey - Glad you have it back, but would definitely be worth getting it checked over first before you use it as the last one I fitted fresh from John made some very loose noises on the dyno - shortly followed by JGM telling me the turbo is cack!
