It's 2 sides of it thought ... Evo is a tad more expensive , but cheaper to get the "numbers" As regards the service , the intervals are shorter , but having a sports car that's been ragged occasionally i was servicing mine every 3k miles , before , after track day anyway ...

The Evo is more suited to the feminine touch, controls are light and flighty. Or the gentleman that's always immaculately groomed and maybe a bit confused about his sexuality
I prefer the more solid, agricultural feel of the Impreza.
They feel slow to me anyway. I don't get the whole 'they're loads faster' they feel so smooth it's boring. A turbo car should be showing off the shove, not how well they've smoothed the twin scroll spool so it feels non turbo.
People who've tried both and gone back to impreza can rise above the 'evo is better' thing an have a warm feeling inside

Horses for courses.
After driving a standard Evo VI i came straight home and put my highly modified STI up for sale... i was that impressed with the Evo.
Unfortunately i'm still waiting for my VI to arrive from Japan so can't give a proper comparrison, but i'm looking forward to finding out.

They are suffering really badly, hence i've had to import one and pay the extra £££
Buying a UK one is a minefield. There was one for sale on the MLR with pretty bad rust for £5500. It's now for sale at a dealer advertised as having no rust and freshly undersealed for £6995.
Whoever buys that one will be in for a shock in 6 months

Banny just wondering if you have driven an evo?
From what people tell me, in the evo you dont as much of "pushed in the seat feeling" when it comes on boost as compared to the scoob, is this the case?

Haha!! Ive always thought about buying an evo, but I know for a fact the thing I would miss most is the sudden kick when she comes on boost, I test drove an M3 which was good but no turbo kick.

The cars are very similar in what they are but IMO the Evo does have the edge in stock form.
It took me 8 Subaru's before i made made the move to buy one and im glad i did. The handling on my 5 was sublime with just a set of lowered springs, far superior to my Bug Sti on BC's and my STI RA on Eibach springs and whiteline parts.
The power delivery is different, less lag and very quick spool. Before i bought one i always read on Subaru forums that Evo's drive themselves which is total bollox. Take your foot off the pedal whilst the AYC is working its voodoo magic and see what happens!.....A very similar thing if you abuse DCCD in OD. Yes, it is more forgiving but forgiving means you can drive faster without the inherent understeer of an Impreza which gives a different slower line in and out of corners.
The "X factor" as banny mentions IMO is only the burble which to be honest i was more than happy to live without, for what for me is a better all round car.

I never had that problem with my classic with full decat. I don't know if it was normal but once the original exhaust was removed and full decat system put on the lag disappeared completely, it was coming on boost immediately. Was great to drive, I couldn't keep out of it it was like an addiction driving it but a killer on fuel consumption around town.

They do lack something as Banny said. I've owned dozens of sporty cars below £20k and driven many others and some cars do appear to have a charm or a certain something. Whether that's just how certain people perceive them, I don't know. I find the Impreza has character, the Evo lacks it. I've owned about seven Evo's over the years and always used to get sucked in to the whole 'they're better' argument. Driving home after purchase it was always... Love it, why didn't I get one sooner! Then after the initial honeymoon period wears off your left with a soulless ornament.

Only got ride of mine because it was too noisy, didn't find it lacking soul, the handling was most amusing.
Thankfully, we're not all the same.
An0n, with the TD04 they are OK, but they don't exactly move that well until you get a bigger turbo on them, then they are somewhat unresponsive compared to an Evo's engine.

Obviously for those with a much a greater variety of car ownership and modding it would be nothing special and once I was obliterated by an RS4 going past me at full chat I realised just how mediocre it really was. But for me it was still massively enjoyable to own and drive and miss it to this day (not had anything powerful since).

I'd rather have an RS6 banny. What puts me off about the GT3 (and why I'd choose the Turbo over the GT3) is actually what makes me not want to use the GTR all the time though. The GTR is a lot rougher and more involving/challenging than most credit it, but often I'm just not in the mood.
An0n, that is a nice position to be in, being happy with it. My attention span is not long enough.

JB yes it was, a full decat for the noise and removal of lag was all I needed plus a very limited budget also helps as the choice of what to have just isn't there! I had 2 MY98 UK 2000 classics both fully decatted. After the first one I wouldn't have had anything else when looking for a scoob the 2nd time around as it was the most reliable car i've had, nothing ever broke on it and just needed servicing and the 2nd one was the same not to mention that raw kick in the back when you floor it. They were bullet proof. I wish i'd never sold the 2nd one as it was low mileage with some factory fitted extras and would have been worth keeping. Can't be many low mileage ones left now.
I always wanted an Evo 4/5/6 but from the comments on this thread i'm glad I never went there as I think I would have been dissapointed.

I had a standard-ish Evo 6 GSR which was great until I discovered a large amount of rot on the back end so got rid and decided to get a STI Type RA to replace it.
I had the Scoob about 2 months until I realised I had made a mistake and then went out to find another Evo, the Impreza just felt like another car, it doesn't have the wow factor that the Evo has.
Now have a 400/400 Evo 4 GSR and its a hoot to drive!

I had a evo iv stage 1 and dynoed at 326bhp felt fast and loved driving it. However they are expensive and the earlier evo blocks suffer crank walk and ayc pump failures so sold it and bought a classic with 2.5 forged engine with hopefully more tuning potential. Havnt experienced the full power of the scoob as clutch was slipping badly and its getting changed.
The evo felt faster of the line and put you back in seat more. Scoob just seems to get to speeds without realising it and has the correct rumble also think the brakes are better. Time will tell

Having had a 400bhp classic, and a few 350bhp scoobs,
Being taken out in a mates Evo9 with 400bhp was eye opening, it really pushes you in the seat, 100 came up in no time. And very good power delivery too.

When I put my foot down IMO the evo WAY out performers the Subaru but really it starts before I turn the key. I just love the scooby, its the weight of the doors and the way they ku-dunk when you close them. The feel of the indicators to the weight of the steering. I feel like its a real mans car but can't deny, the evo on paper at least is the far better car.
If I was given a evo, in no small way would I be disappointed but as a car for the road its the Subaru all the way for me.
