You don't need to change either to drive in Europe - only to stay legal in the UK. If they're not real Xenons with the horizontal lenses (like on the hawks and later) then you'll need angle stickers/diverters but you def don't need to worry about the plates as non-UK police cannot fine you for anything to do with your car which may or may not be illegal in their country (obvious exceptions are no MOT and a non-road worthy car).

I've been running non-UK "Silver on black" front (mini) and rear plates and off-white LEDs as sidelights since I brought the Hawk over to France and despite being stopped a couple of times for routine "papers" check there's never an issue.

I was told last night that legally the plates have to have a stamp of where they were made... also I have to have a gb stamp. ... I've looked on dvla and can only see where it says drivers can have a gb badge presume it means as option ... but also my fonts and style are wrong ...

Nope, here's my front one (back is a bit bigger but same colours) - you could probably just stick a "GB" badge on the boot if you wanted to cover your *rse but I don't bother and driven all over Europe like this:

I don't know the specifics of the UK law but the whole idea behind the country marking on the plate was a euro thing and as there is no enforceable euro-law/standard on number plates I'm assuming that you could have a Subaru badge in place of the GB emblem - certainly wouldn't cause an issue outside of GB.

Maybe one day when Europe agrees on things it may be different but until then I'll continue to enjoy MOT's every 2 years and not at all on my motorbikes and any plates that aren't on French vehicles can be whatever colour, font, size, etc. I fancy

You don't legally need a badge at all, however you can't have a Subaru badge on your number plate. See link below.....
