as said, if an exhaust gasket has cracked they make a clicking sound, so when the car is cold fire it up and try and get your hands around the joints before it gets too hot to touch.

also it might stop when hot as the gaskets expand they can sometimes seal themselves.

if your stood with your head under the bonnet and rev the engine via the throttle linkage then you should be able to identify what area the sound is coming from.

if you were closer id take a look for you.

Default I'm a dipstick

The 'specialist' said forging was a bad idea and that it was the crankshaft that was knackered. She was as dry as a nun though,so having filled her with oil she's running like a princess with dynamite up her ****.
I may well be in touch soon if/when she blows but for now no noise equals no problems.....doesn't it?

Can you elaborate Steve?

I like to know what specialist said forging a 2.5 is a bad idea as he clearly hasn't got a clue about them

Sorry I might have this wrong but did you say it had run out of oil? . And when you started to have problems was pulling the dip stick not on your first list of things to check?

He was pulling the stick, but where it had the thin residue of oil on the stick to the full marker when he was dipping it led him to believe it was full.

Believe me when I say he is a total novice when it comes to cars, but everyone starts somewhere albeit not on an impreza

You're expected to know how to check all your fluids (including oil) as part of your driving test these days, should have always been this way in my opinion.
