full engine rebuild

Mate I have a WRX and an STI, I have had one rebuild by a so called specialist which went pop the first time it was driven hard but with sympathy for the gear box, 5 speed dccd running 330 bhp on an STI Type R.
I rebuilt it myself and did all the work that entails.
I'm now having another engine built by a very well respected engine builder, see duncan Grahams time attack 700+ bhp car and Bob Rawls engine build in the project section.
Mine will come in under £3k and run 450bhp all day long for years to come.
Your car, your money, your choice.
All 2.0L STI engines by the way.

I have a 2005 wrx that I ended up putting a rebuilt engine in and I have spent far too much on modding it. Would I do it the same way again? No. If you are remotely interested in your mods (sounds like you are), an sti will save you ALOT in the long run. After everything I've done, I'm still looking at a 6 speed and new brakes. An sti doesn't need them and if you want K sports, etc. Brembos sell for decent money. I just wouldn't throw my money at my wrx again no matter how much I do love it......it just isn't financially viable.
HOWEVER, you seem fairly attached after your first day with it and after 3 years, I wouldn't change mine now. So, assuming you want to keep it......rebuild it. Even if you go for an used short block you need decent oil, sparks, filters, coolant, cambelt, timing kit, water pump, oil pump, modine, then head, rocker, inlet, coolant over block gaskets, plus you want a new clutch, at 82k probably needs a flywheel too, plus the short block itself.......if you spend some time on import car parts and look all the above up, I bet Ditch isn't far wrong with comparative costs.
Just food for thought from a wrx owner thats been there.....

I've got a similar T shirt, If only I'd done my research before buying a WRX. I saved
probably £3000 by buying a WRX instead of an STI, but I've spent the best part of
£5000 turning it into an STI. When I want to sell it its still a WRX

No but I know someone who probably does
Paul just rebuilt an engine for us, and yea your right you can get one to come in under 3k for a bottom end.
I'd still push my luck on an sti lump tho at 350hp, if you bought it all complete ditch it would be nowhere near 3k for a complete engine unless the garage fitting it is a con artist
I know for a lovely engine complete with everything minus turbo and injectors which he already has for £1500 so he still has 2k in his back pocket, are you going to tell me it's gonna cost 2k for gaskets and fitting? I'd be more concerned with the garage I used than the engine tbh

So we're back to WRX heads with 82k on them, refresh ??? head gaskits, cam seals, crank seals, rocker cover gaskets, flatten decks, skim heads?
Would you drop it straight in without putting a fresh cambelt kit and water pump on?
I know it's all immaterial now but i'm still curious.
The lad has done the right thing in taking it to API at least he will have a fresh engine AND a warranty.
