As you probably know I was involved with the Cobb AccessPort on the GTR which again is a similar device. Most of all, I have nothing to gain from painting a false picture, but certainly don't know everything. On the other hand, there are many patterns to recognise with a new "tuner" car and how it is received/tuned/how the drivetrain failures play out with warranty.

yeah my concern with Mine is not the engine but more of the Diffs and gearbox,

the forged engine if turbo is bought to suit is ok for 500BHP, however the gearbox isn't I don't think.

There is a guy in Scotland whos pumped his up to 475 on the stock A45 internals 0-60 is 3.1.

Guy is Aus has just double piggybacked a WILLALL and another unit and managed 191 MPH LOL

Basically they are unmodified GTR performance but on a 2.0 instead of 3.8. Driven hard, that is considerable stress.

To be fair DMS insist the map is undetectable but Acid at MSL was more honest and said if they really looked they could probably find it. If you asked MB for a new AMG engine I'm pretty sure they would really look for it.

Shame really as the C63 seems to be one of those very few NA cars that does release a lot of power with a remap

... and if they mainly gain from fully opening the throttles then it seems rude not to unless it is for transmission torque protection. Much as I like turbos, it is only because we don't get enough big engines, the ideal is a well packaged big engine which is fuel efficient in performance situations compared to the smaller turbo engines which run rich. Cruise economy and emissions tests overstate the economy of downsized engines and diesels. I can quite see how manufacturers do not want their boost curves raised or filled out, OEMs are pushing harder than ever already.

As far as I can tell from the internet it does just seem to be about opening the throttles. But then I don't know enough about engines or mapping to really know whether this is the truth or not.

In terms of protecting the transmission afaik the official higher power C63 cars ie 480 BHP PP and 507 BHP special edition all run the standard transmission.

Zip, I saw the M3 today at the local dealer. It is a lovely looking car inside and out, made me regret putting down the deposit on the C63 AMG a little.

But then the C63 is about £22k less than a M3 I would have specced so I have to cut my coat etc etc

Ah yes, I've been keeping an eye on that, signed up for email updates some months ago. It's only a coupe afaik which is a small issue for me but as long as the rear seats are useable should be ok.

It'll be nice to have the choice between the new C63, M3 and Lexus in about 18 months time, competition is a good thing when your not a blinkered fan boy of one brand.

I have a feeling that the M3 might end up having the least exciting engine of the three.

Great car Ding; I looked hard at buying one but I couldn't live with the tiny fuel range. Awesome sounding car though.

We've had 30mpg average on a very fast drive from Calais to the Black Forest in Germany which is pretty amazing for 320bhp (most are 340 when run in).

But it's a fairly dinky car not an estate.

Agreed on some of the options comments; most expensive isn't always best or worth it.

I've been wondering for a while where you'd got to. Thanks for the comments. I've discovered just how bad the fuel economy and range is, it's like the M5 all over again

But this time I'm just going to have to stomach it and work a bit harder to pay the fuel bills. I've tried the frugal diesel thing and it was soul destroying.

Having done a vaguely similar thing but in a far less spectacular way (fast diesel to significantly faster petrol), I really am a but anti soot chuckers now.

That throttle response, that sound, that rev limit!

When the more powerful petrol is also far lower than the diesel on C02, about the same on fuel (unless you rag it; then it's a guzzler), lighter and not choked by cr4p like DPFs, DMFs and swirl flaps, you have to ask why?!

The C63 is a beast though and in estate form, very cool. So glad you didn't go for a white one; borderline dodgy with the biggest wheels. Black/grey are much nicer.

The M135i has 7k on the clock now so well run in; still lots of fun!

Nice pics on the other thread Ding. On the other hand I am a paragon of economy running my first diseasel, 900 miles to and from Herts at the weekend and did 45mpg at average speed of 70mph which isn't bad for an AWD that is over 5m long. I would choose a petrol for my mileage though, but there isn't much choice of non performance cruisers in petrol.

Thanks John. You've got the GTR for excitement, I only had the 535d and I can tell you I NEVER looked forward to going for a drive.

The fuel economy on this thing will be poor but my mileage over the 3.25 years I had the 535d was 16,000. Even if the C63 costs me a few extra £k in fuel over the years I'll just have to grin and bear it.

This engine is a master piece and I'm glad that I've had the chance to have it at my disposal. In years to come I think we'll only see engines like this in Ferraris, Lambos etc.

Btw, if you ever have a spare moment could you do a search on the C63 engine and tell me what you make of the remaps? I'm not sure why I'm even thinking about remaps, this thing is crazy fast already

It sounds worth remapping to open the throttle(s) fully, just whether you are prepared to take the small risk on a car under warranty.

C63 cold starting; one of life's aural high points.

Ours isn't bad either.

I'm sure the M3/4 is even rortier.

Looks nice and understated, probably the best looking in estate form too.

Mattee - the M3 is actually quite tinny until pushing on then it gets rortier.
Can never sound as good as a n/a v8!

Really pleased with it Zip. Maybe it feels extra special because I had to live with a diesel barge for over three years.

It's quite odd, when I'm driving it I feel like I'm driving some exotic sports car and then when I get out I'm reminded its a hearse.

The numbers don't tell you what the engine actually feels like, it's epic, it feels faster than my M5.

I know this isn't in the C63 league but it's pretty good for a wee little hatchback and fairly similar to the M3 (the engine is very similar);


(skip to 20s before anything actually happens - 3m20s is cool too).
