5x30=150 So that's £150 for travelling expenses, which at first I thought was a fecking joke. Upon some pondering, depending on the circumstances , it might not be too bad. My musings below are only based on the £30 each already mentioned in the thread, I don't know what people charge.
I'll use Simon(JGM) as a first example as I know he's travelled up to the North East before to map. IIRC Simon is Surrey based, so it's a fair old pitch hike up the country. That would mean a rather early start to his day to arrive at a sensible time. Allow a couple of hours for each mapping session.
After that it wouldn't be unthinkable that he might try and find accomodation for the night, either locally before he left or on his journey home. So when you look at it like that then all things considered, it doesn't seem too bad.
However, as a second example, say Andrew Carr was coming to the North East to map a few cars. He's based in the North West, so a lot closer therefore travelling time would be greatly reduced. Natural assumption is that he'd be able to leave home later and still get back home at a sensible time whilst allowing the same couple of hours for each car.
In that scenario I'd say paying £150 would be excessive to say the least.
Before anyone gets all upset, I only used Simon and Andrew as they are opposite ends of the scale distance wise, as they will both travel to customers.

I have used Bob Rawle and Andy Forrest so far, one from Scotland and one from Bristol so as you say Micky the travelling charge doesn't seem too bad tbh considering what time they set off to make it to the location, yes its 2 hour mapping slots as well
Does Dynamite charge?

Duncan, if you didn't have your head so far up your own ****, then you would have met me properly. Dismissing me at TOTB a couple of years ago when I approached you about advertising on a local forum, which was already agreed that I would catch you there, because, and this is what you said; "Can't talk, eating my ice cream." and proceeding to make haste away.
You are right, you've never mapped my car. Never will get the chance to either.
I know fine well who you are. I don't hate you, nothing of the sort, hate is a very strong word to use. I think you're incompetent, arrogant and frankly a bit of a dick. Just for clarity.
I always tend to get my facts right. So you're a web designer or something abd not a lap top fixer. Meh. Doesn't change a thing.

Duncan has mapped two of my Subaru's and I have been delighted with both.
More relevant though is that I found him a reliable, polite, courteous, helpful and somewhat humble person.
I have run my own businesses for over 20 years and tend to give the same level of respect and courtesy to my customers as they give to me, maybe he does the same?

Duncan didn't charge for travel time, it was a set £250 to map the car (and yes, it was around 30 mins of actual road time) probably about an hour in total, once the det cans/wideband had been attached,a bit of small talk, drive to and from "private road" and detach of detcans/wideband in tailpipe etc, I had already installed the daughterboard into ECU,He arrived around 9.45, I was back at work way before midday.
But I guess travel time isn't needed to be paid as he had 1 or 2 others within the area to map so £250 a map for cars within the area, Bristol, Birmingham etc, all 50 miles within each other, works out well, logistically.

In many ways this is a good thread and The Rig has many good points to make,I have been doing a lot of reading and come across some great info on the mapping scene. I have even come across a thread today in another Scooby forum which is very similar to this one but it's about another well known and respected pro mapper(before anyone asks I'm not mentioning any names or the forum) the thing is nobody can please everybody all of the time. I have also noticed as time goes on that a lot more people like The Rig have started to successfully remap their own cars, this must be a good thing and will maybe drive the price which pro mappers charge down. It doesn't really make any sense to me that the price of mapping is comparable with the hardware!? Surely the costs and time to develop the hardware&software far exceeds the cost for an individual to upload and tweak the maps,I'm not saying that pro mappers don't earn their money and don't in any way want to sound disrespectful because it must take years of hard work to gain these skills,I just think the costs of development compared to the costs of remapping are a little off balance.
This forum is certainly one that moves forward with the times and the knowledge and help grows with it,so in my opinion threads like this one can only be a good thing,as well as being dam good reading and a good laugh along the way. JayJay you really do bring a smile to my face and I mean that in a good way your a top bloke and don't let anyone tell you different. Cheers@TheRig too this thread is an eye opener

However from your description I have no idea who you are referring to.
I first met Duncan through our local Scooby forum which he has supported since 2009 and to which he pays a small fee for advertising. He is very popular with the forum members and has mapped numerous cars belonging to said members.
I had collected a few parts including a new exhaust, turbo and injectors, and was asking if anyone was prepared to help with fitting.
I had two offers of help and one was from Duncan.
Long one short, he spent almost two days working with me on my car and didn't charge me a penny. He wasn't even expecting me to have him map the car to accommodate the new mods. Why two days? Well we weren't in a rush, we hit a few snags which needed sorting, we drank some tea and had a few laughs. And as I said, I wasn't paying for his time.
I have subsequently had Duncan supply, install and map my Syvecs and I have nothing but good to say about that either.
So I don't recognise any of these dreadful character traits that have been attributed to him.
Incompetent? Hardly. I have seen Duncan successfully demonstrate a range of skills in both mechanical and IT disciplines, hardly incompetent.
Arrogant? Not a chance. I have seen Duncan map other cars, indeed I have been in other cars when they are being mapped, and he treats everyone the same. He will do what he can for the customer to see that they are happy with the end result. Of course that has to be within the constraints of the mechanical integrity of the car being mapped.
Dismissive? This is a joke. I have always found Dunc to be very approachable, helpful, knowledgeable, and ready to offer advice. The only time I have known him not to answer the phone to a customer is when he doesn't have a hand free.
Dynamite? My experience with Duncan as a mapper is that he takes the utmost care to achieve the best result with a good safety margin. If he finds something isn't right with the subject car he won't go any further with the mapping session unless it can be corrected there and then. Of course it has to be said that things can go wrong as with any process. But you can't correct mechanical defficiencies with a laptop and a pair of det cans, can you?
As for being a dick, well we did have a few laughs. If that's being a dick that's a pretty big club to belong to
As I said, we can only go by our own experiences, and this has been mine.

This is exactly my bug bear, most of what i have seen from the mappers on this forum (NOT THEM ALL) they have used a downloaded base map and use FREE open source software or at least software that does not cost a lot (i have bought the logging and flashing software that the guy who mapped my car first used for £90) he uploaded a free base map and spent 2 power runs tweaking it to my car. I wonder if when they use these Patches like Carberry Or Merpmods they actually donate money to them as its these people who have put all the effort into the software ect - oh yes and things like launch control and flat foot shifting for the most is also a free download - something they charge £50 for - again do we think any of that gets donated to the guys who actually put the work in???
