Mappers - A law Unto Themselves ?
#363
We can only go by our own experiences.
However from your description I have no idea who you are referring to.
I first met Duncan through our local Scooby forum which he has supported since 2009 and to which he pays a small fee for advertising. He is very popular with the forum members and has mapped numerous cars belonging to said members.
I had collected a few parts including a new exhaust, turbo and injectors, and was asking if anyone was prepared to help with fitting.
I had two offers of help and one was from Duncan.
Long one short, he spent almost two days working with me on my car and didn't charge me a penny. He wasn't even expecting me to have him map the car to accommodate the new mods. Why two days? Well we weren't in a rush, we hit a few snags which needed sorting, we drank some tea and had a few laughs. And as I said, I wasn't paying for his time.
I have subsequently had Duncan supply, install and map my Syvecs and I have nothing but good to say about that either.
So I don't recognise any of these dreadful character traits that have been attributed to him.
Incompetent? Hardly. I have seen Duncan successfully demonstrate a range of skills in both mechanical and IT disciplines, hardly incompetent.
Arrogant? Not a chance. I have seen Duncan map other cars, indeed I have been in other cars when they are being mapped, and he treats everyone the same. He will do what he can for the customer to see that they are happy with the end result. Of course that has to be within the constraints of the mechanical integrity of the car being mapped.
Dismissive? This is a joke. I have always found Dunc to be very approachable, helpful, knowledgeable, and ready to offer advice. The only time I have known him not to answer the phone to a customer is when he doesn't have a hand free.
Dynamite? My experience with Duncan as a mapper is that he takes the utmost care to achieve the best result with a good safety margin. If he finds something isn't right with the subject car he won't go any further with the mapping session unless it can be corrected there and then. Of course it has to be said that things can go wrong as with any process. But you can't correct mechanical defficiencies with a laptop and a pair of det cans, can you?
As for being a dick, well we did have a few laughs. If that's being a dick that's a pretty big club to belong to
As I said, we can only go by our own experiences, and this has been mine.

The car was out of use for sometime but it did 20 plus runs in extreme heat at totb this weekend with not a single issue.
I'm guessing a lot (not all) of the posts about Dunc are not coming from experience as usual on these forums.
A lot of new (welsh . ) members Google the answers to most questions.

This is exactly my bug bear, most of what i have seen from the mappers on this forum (NOT THEM ALL) they have used a downloaded base map and use FREE open source software or at least software that does not cost a lot (i have bought the logging and flashing software that the guy who mapped my car first used for £90) he uploaded a free base map and spent 2 power runs tweaking it to my car. I wonder if when they use these Patches like Carberry Or Merpmods they actually donate money to them as its these people who have put all the effort into the software ect - oh yes and things like launch control and flat foot shifting for the most is also a free download - something they charge £50 for - again do we think any of that gets donated to the guys who actually put the work in???

Again not knocking other mappers, Simon also helped me out big time in a different way a long time ago. But MickyWrx's opinions of Duncan are miles away from reality. To be honest from his ice cream story, his comments and attacks are pathetic IMO.

Jesus ditch , you been brainwashed and gone to the dark side
You know as well as me some are robbing gits ( mmm) and some are excellent
Very sorry ditchy , read it properly and realised you were replying to the donation part
Phew thank god for that , thought you'd gone mental like me

Great to have you back on board after your hibernation
You came out of nowhere to take over the mapping discussions and gained legendary statuss in scoobynet in a few weeks with your ideas and comments
A ten pager and even your own section on mapping
Not many thread can last as long as yours
Think this could be a 20 pager now
And we are not even talking about dump valves and the effect on mapping
