996 turbo got to be worth looking at, seen these cheap enough now, and not far of the price of the cars you have listed. Cant see then dropping much in price over the years, and plenty of specialists about to get any work done!!!

Only downside I can think of is the rear seats if you have kids, but sod the kids, its a Porsche 911 turbo

Wanted a V10 almost all my life and when i finally got one I realised that in the automotive world, its true what they say... "You should never meet your hero's".

I wanted to love it, I really did, and I came to it from my E39 M5.
It was lacking in torque, transmission was violent, ride was harsh and build quality was far from the E39.
The deciding factor for me was that on top of teh above annoyances, she only averaged 13mpg. (Yes 13. Thats not a typo...)

She had to go... and whilst ive now got a 635D which i love... I have still got the E39 M5 and still to this day love everything about it bar the 22mpg it returns.

Cayman is absolute sh1 te.
Anyone who disagrees can give me 4k

They are renound for cylinder scoring ^^^^^ 4k bill to be done right

Every week you will see one on eBay 8/10k that 'smokes a little bit'

Yep it'll smoke 4k out of your pocket

Rs4 , just like type r brads on here, loved mine iirc I did £350 in fuel on the first weekend , put it on the drive and sold it....regretted it.

M3csl....best car I've owned , beat the m5 hands down , absolute stupid money to buy now though , I sold mine 3 years ago for 18k....now 30

I really have to stop wasting money on cars

That's a lot of car for the money.

I'd love one but...

I have had an E60 M5 and they are awesome....V10 howls like nothing else, but the very low MPG and small tank is a pain.. I seen as low as 8.8mpg,but an average of 14mpg on my daily commute...
Best i ever saw was 28.9mpg on a steady run down the M1..

They are a complex car, with plenty to go wrong and the bills can add up.. Clutch, brakes and vanos can take a lump out of you though. They can also use oil, stats vary but BMW say a max of 2.5 litres per 1000 miles is acceptable.... Thats a lot of 10w60!!...
Mine used to do about 0.5 litre every 1000 miles but there are plenty that are a lot worse..

Mines used to slap C63's but it had a evolve map and an eisenmann exhaust, apparently around 530bhp was the figure mentioned when i bought it.

Porsche 996/997..... I have had them,3 in fact and didnt enjoy any of them. Nice to look at,awful to own. Ditto the Cayman.. M96/97 is a proper poor piece of design..Expect 10k repair if it pops, and there is a good chance it will.

RS4..... Thirsty, fat and boring... They go well enough but they leave me cold.

E9x M3....... Good car,but the V8 is weird, its not really quick until thrashed but in the real world you can hardly ever get the Rpm's up enough to extract the 400bhp.. I also think price wise they are ready to fall off a cliff... I was offered a 57 plate with 60k on recently and turned it away at 17k..

Interesting what you say about the M3 V8. Journalists seem to rave about it BUT they are grabbing it by the scruff of the neck and driving at ten tenths. You're saying day to day in a world of traffic jams and speed limits it fails to deliver. Surely it still feels special during the commute to work?

Thanks mate. Some interesting thoughts and good to hear from somebody with real world experience of the cars.

What would you spend £20k on?

Anything with 300bhp + is fast when ragged at 10/10ths around a track, living with them daily is a totally different thing.. If like me your driving mainly consists of the daily slog and maybe a run to the hills at weekend if you get time, then your paying a lot in consumables and running costs to have that hour a month when things truly come together and your car is worth every penny.

M5 will use £100 fuel to 160/180 miles..£500 in tax..£300 for oil and filter change. Insurance £xxxx ?? Mine wasnt too bad actually at £366..
Pads and discs will cost £1500-£1800..
Clutch and flywheel around £2000....

So things can add up and the E9x M3 isnt much better..

So you have to ask yourself, does all the money spent make you feel special..?

Probably not no.

What didn't you like about the 911's?

I've driven two 997s for a short distance and liked them both. They both turned in very sharply with no hint of understeer. Felt well balanced.

My requirements are something that will make me grin. Something that when you floor it it will sound special, be as quick as my JDM Scooby or quicker. Something that will handle well and have good feedback.

2 or 4 door ?
2 seater?
2 or 4WD ?

The thing i mainly dont like about the 997 is the crap engine and box... Yes they do handle very well, they are light and nimble but thats all.

I personally could never get over Porsche paranoia, everytime you turn the key you cant help feel that its about to pop.
Bore scoring is a huge problem with the 997 (upto 2009)....The bigger the bores get the worse the problem is...Bad heat dissipation around the cylinder liner walls is the major problem, but bad design means this cant be cured... Apart from having a Hartech steel linered rebuild,7-10k depending how much you want to failsafe yourself..

Caterham 7 kit car, mine does all that and cost me less than £400 year

That's everything bar the petrol

And I could sell it for more than I bought it for 10 years ago

The bore scoring is a new one to me until today. Seems to be worse on Tiptronics as they pull away in 2nd and the torque scores the bores? Or so the Hartech thread on Pistonheads says.

RMS and input shaft I'd already read up on.

I'm open to suggestions. I'm not fussed on the number of doors but it must have 4 seats (or as a 911 has a bit of room in the back to squeeze the daughter in. She's 19 so very rarely comes out with us though)

I could've sworn I had replied last night but it's gone Can't be bothered to type it all out again but I recommend getting an E63/64 M6. Huge power, huge grin, less common than the M5 and a nicer cabin compared to the newer E9X M3. If you buy one just make sure it comes with AUC/extended warranty. They are bulletproof but mine had electrical/software issues. As said, tank is too small and you'll be lucky to see 200 miles, but the S85 is fantastic. Definitely one of the best engines ever built.

What's your max budget or is 20k your limit? Other cars you might want to consider....

You could get yourself a Bentley Continental GT if you upped your budget slightly.

Fooooking garbage.

Every week or 2 you will find them on eBay/pistonheads for around the 10k mark as most owners are sick of throwing money at them.

Were the bores scored? Was it a tiptronic?
