Would you entertain one of these? Ok so it doesn't have the prestige, but ticks all the box and will provide fun in spades, plus it'll still be under warranty.

You can get as much advice as you like on here, but you really need to drive the cars you're interested in - you'll soon rule a few out. IMO, a big engined saloon based on a family barge isn't much of a fun weekend car, because you can't hide their roots, however hard the manufacturers try.

I wouldn't rule out a Cayman (or Boxster) based on the reliability problems - it only affects a minority of cars, despite what you might think after reading about it on the internet. Buy carefully and you'll have one of the best handling (and, therefore, most fun) cars available anywhere.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ quite a sobering site. Didn't think a RA in that state of tune would come close tbh.

Shows that weight will ruin any car in the end. Just watched the Top Gear lap of the M5 and again I'd of expected it to be quicker.

Hawkeye Spec C or maybe even another JDM Hawk STi and playing with it a little is becoming more tempting by the day.............Pity I've got to give up on the prestige part of the deal

A 450bhp RA is always gonna beat an M5/M6 off the line..

With 4WD,and the DSC on the BMW will be working overtime to try and combat wheelspin if you just try and boot it...

I had the DSC light flashing in 4th gear in the M5....

I dare say a highly tuned RA will be doing the 0-6-mph in under 4secs ?

Its comparing apples and oranges really....

Why not get a BMW, an Audi or even a Merc and play with that a little instead. That way you still get your luxury and your performance?

There must be tuning products for these marques.... I only know Merc/AMG and Eurocharged/Weistec are your friends there.

My mistake. I read the RA as being 320-340 not 420-440. Totally understandable in that case

True. Something turbocharged are always going to be easier and cheaper to tune though. Unless of cause it's something with a supercharger on it

I remember Andy F's first RA was running the 1/4 in 11.3s with 'just' 350bhp. At the end of the day, something that gets out the hole that well, is light and has short ratios is always going to be rocketship fast 0-120mph. People don't buy M6/M5's because it's the fastest car they can afford...they buy them because they are rocketship fast and comfortable, well built, loaded with toys, etc, etc. There isn't really a comparison.

Now you're getting there

Psst ...55K

Maps, pulleys, induction, headers, X pipe... hello 625bhp and torque to match.... then replace the stock supercharger for a bigger Weistec one..... hello 700bhp+

Ignore me as it's just the bag I am currently into and it's addictive

If I wanted to tune something I would always buy something forced induction and AWD. It makes tuning easy and worthwhile.

With the Ford GTs I detail they can be taken to 800Bhp+ with just a exhaust, pulley and Whipple supercharger

The only relatively affordable german car I have ever wanted is the E46 M3 CSL, nothing else really floats my boat as a weekend blast machine

Yep, going for silly money now. We really have been spoilt by the bang for buck of the Impreza

Matteeboy, I thought you didn't like tuning, but do you think on road tyres that the N54/N55 can reach its considerable tuning potential as a road car with RWD even with an LSD? With the appropriately setup centre diff you can have AWD that has great steering feel and is oversteer biased under power. These setups feel more RWD than many RWD cars, they feel like good RWD just with a lot more traction and acceleration in the road legal part of the gearbox.

John, this is something I've been thinking about of late. The F30 335d x-drive holds a lot of appeal and, as far as I can tell, you can't get the 335i in x-drive. For me, regardless of other arguments, the diesel wins hands down. Perhaps this is where Scotland vs South of England weather plays a role, but I can be confident that a 335i would effectively be one-wheel drive 65% of the time up here. A decent differential would help (and would be fun) but with 306bhp on tap I'd be willing to bet you'd rarely get the power down cleanly below 60mph.

I've just got a lowly standard 170bhp Leon FR and the fronts are constantly spinning when I'm just cutting about looking to make brisk progress. I have no issue managing wheelspin when I'm 'on it' but otherwise it's just inconvenient and annoying.
