Well I have just spent a happy two hours searching the web for 2.5 WRX failures and there are very few ... mainly gasket related as stated above. Compared to STI failures the number is minuscule!

 

Obviously not had many dealings with the 2.5l engine then has he.

Fractured oil pick-up pipes,Ring land failure on No.2+4 pistons,head gasket failure,fractured liners around the crankcase bolt relief,gummed up oil control ring pack leading to high oil consumption, to name the common failures.

To the OP - as mentioned above, the WRX has a less stressful life,occasional head gasket failure but nowhere as many failures compared to the STi.

If you look at the European impreza car sale's of the 2.5 in 2006-2012 http://left-lane.com/european-car-sa...ubaru-impreza/ and then have a look at a study carried out by Warranty Direct UK of engine failures across all marques http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...ngine-failures you can get a ideal for the average rate for engine failures. If you then apply this to the number of the 2.5 car sale's you can get an idea of how many failures is acceptable, or to be expected from any car manufacturer.

Statistics can be played about with to suit any agenda so I will let who ever cares the opportunity to look for yourself.

 

So did you go and look at the 2.5 you mentioned earlier?

p.s, remember HG failure still requires a full rebuild, unless you fancy rolling the dice again.

 

Yes I did and the car is fantastic, but I am not sure my trade show stuff will fit in it. It seems quite a bit smaller than the Volvo V40 I have now. Have a friend of a friend bringing her car up tomorrow and will see if my stuff will in fact fit in... if so I will buy it.

The main issue is in the Volvo the rear seat bench folds up and the seat backs fold down to give a level floor with plenty of height. The WRX wagon the seat backs fold on top of the bench so there is a lot less height.

 

Take the back seats out, we all know your a billy no mates.

If you're worried, look for a decent 05 plate WRX wagooon, Christophe. Chris P has a belter of a car (saloon though and he won't sell it).

 

Im the owner of the car chris came to see today. I allowed him to kick its head in on the motorway and also to drive it in local rds. I have nothing to hide. My 2.5 is bullet proof full history and documented. I bought it from jct in rotherham and as all will know jason doesnt sell **** cars. Heres hoping the show stuff fits as im due to pick my new audi up soon.

I just didn't realise there was going to possibly be a difference in load space to the extent that there seems to be on looking at it.

I feel a bit of an idiot for not checking beforehand really, but we had a thread a few months back where we discussed it and I did think it would be OK.

Anyway I will know tomorrow and fingers crossed as I really do like the car!

 

I really cant believe you are even entertaining the idea of owning a poo.5 engined scoob, with your lets face it extremely strong opinion for it failing as soon as its off the forecourt or in this case some punters driveway

Except that statistically it is a hell of a lot less likely to blow up in WRX tune than in STI tune which makes sense as one is putting more strain on the internals than the other.

I do agree., however, that it is hardly the best designed engine in the world. Thing is the last of the 2L cars is a 2005 and they are very hard to find in standard tune .... older cars do turn up, but 10 years old is probably old enough really for me. So I either plump for a 2.5 or buy outside the marque.

Anyway it seems the load space is to decide the issue so it may be all academic!

 

Same here. Owned my every day drive 06 Hawk 2.5 WRX since it was 1 year 9k miles old. Now at 64k miles and has aggressively ran 334bhp for nearly half it's life. Been the most reliable dependable car I've owned to date!

 

Well statistically according to the scabbynet massive yes The official figures for STi failures aren't as bad as you think, especially if you have been privy to the non IM figures.

Get it mapped properly and maintain it well, put the right fuel in it and don't mod it to levels it was never designed for its a fantastic road unit.

Anyway I think the load space in mine is larger than the old blob wagons, it has a huge boot

Yea well it depends on how they have been treated in a lot of the cases Yes i know some standard cars have popped, but without knowing the cars complete history the internet stats and banter are well a lottery.

Same engine, but the internal materials have been refined, for example the 2015 pistons i believe have a ceramic coating on the ringlands according to someone who has ripped one apart on Nasioc (for research purposes not to rebuild it! )

Anyway to be honest i don't care, mines backed up by a non IM but IM equivalent 5yr warranty, so if it explodes in a chocolaty mess before then so be it
