2.5 WRX - engine?

Yes yes we all know the issues, no one is disputing that, but to say they all go bang, especially in the new car is frankly horsesh1t.
You still own it but don't use it anymore, yea ok tubbs
Yea well its in their interest to raise the flaws at any opportunity with any engine as it's their business and livelihood to fix them!

so are you saying there are no issues with the 2.5 and api are making then up to get business??

Problem exists.... but there are many caviats to what constitutes a failure and this is mostly only in the older models anyway. Its too early to say what will happen with the new cars, only time will tell

agreed the newer cars are unknown as of yet but the thread is about a Hawkeye and these are known to be a poor engine especially in sti form.

lol how do you know more have failed than succeeded at an early stage? (which is wrong by the way, you need to check the correct stats, not some threads on some internet forums)

no such stories about the 2.0 lump.

lol b0llocks the 2ltr can quite easily chew up it rings and consume oil, look at Wongs old engine or knock its shells out. My own old blob STi was also starting to use a bit of oil and it was only a stage 1 car.

WTF - are you being this daft on purpose?
I owned a 330S, I sold it, it WENT rattle rattle, there is no THINK about it
I don't know of the other two, I know both of them personally, infact I was speaking with one of them yesterday afternoon.
I know of another hatch STI in N.I that had an engine failure, however I don't know that owner, so didn't comment.

Not even going to comment.

If you read this thread properly you might get an idea. Basing your own facts on forums and facebook = fail.

Rubbish it was using a litre every 100 miles or something, thats pretty bad and oil starvation can lead to ringland failure, just a case of whether you do something about it earlier rather than later. HG issue granted

a high mileage 9 year old ( nearly 100k )highly modified 2.0 driven with zero mechanical sympathy failing is not the same as a standard low mileage unit failing

A man of high standing in the community like yourself normally gets a ten pager
And that's for a warm up
When it goes quite we can add dump valves ,Armageddon ,DIY mapping and raciest views and call people names to keep it going
Subaru engines have gone down the toilet
Great untill 2008 untill some accountant interfered with the engineers specifications and ask for a discount
Add the chocolate and dodgy gasgets and thinner bolts one little japanese man said
The rest is history
Tick tock tick Boom

Decisons decisons to replace my other two cars with
Probably a Nismo RS amd a civic type R
STi is on the list but stumbling block is the 3 year warrenty as I was hoping it would give me 6 years of trouble free motoring untill I retire
Greenwagons still going well though
Must be the 2.0 engine

OK, I've just spent 3 1/2 hours looking through the 2008 engine failure thread and across SN in general but mainly the sticky 2008 thread.
I am only interested in first hand experiences, ie they owned the car and no modified cars, although I have included some mildly moded cars, ie exhaust and some cars from across Europe.
The cars listed I think are standard but not 100%.
The hatch,2008 onwards including MY11 engine failures........27
The hawkeye, including the wrx, sti and rb320.........4
I also came across 2 standard blobs that had engine failures but wasn't looking.
API gave a few examples that I don't think were linked to the ones I've mentioned plus a few more that came from reputable people such as Alan Jeffrey etc, these brought the total to about mid 50's.
The vast majority of the 2008 thread is made up from only a handful of people with Littleted being the biggest, who funnily enough has had two 2.5 with no problems.
I suspect that if I had looked for just hawks then I would come across more but it's time for my afternoon nap.
No doubt someone will come back and tell me my head is up my **** or something to that effect but regardless what anyone else says I am and have been doing a lot of reading up and searching, this is not because I have one or will ever buy a standard non forged one but because iam sad and have nothing better to do.
If you double that figure to about 100 that is about 2% of about 5,000, I suspect that more than this have been sold across the uk but playing it safe at 5,000.
2% is the average number for engine failures across all marques in Europe.
There has been about 67,000 2.5's sold in Europe so saying that the UK share is 5,000 seems to be pretty fair I think.
I will say again, it is not in my interest for the 2.5 to be any good, I don't personally care about standard form, I am planning on buying a hawk sti for forged internals etc and some good power, the power I won't is also the tipping point for the 2.0 needing to be forged so 2.5 engine failures are not relevant to me.

Could have been a billion and one reasons
If the 2.5 was awful there is no way they would still be using that same engine after all these years in multiple countries among multiple cars
