It occurred to me this morning that having been involved in the AMG scene for 2 years now I have not come across anyone scamming anyone. No dodgy engine tuners and builders, no one selling fake parts on Ebay, no mint second-hand engines and gearboxes that turn out to be turds.
It's not like there isn't a big tuning and modding scene, because there is especially in the US and Germany.
It got me wondering why all I seem to read on here these days is about people being scammed and conned.... what is it about the Subaru scene that engenders this or is it prevalent to all marques and the AMG boys have just been lucky so far.

It's not like there isn't a big tuning and modding scene, because there is especially in the US and Germany.

Well my mate is currently under Lock and key for £400,000 conspiracy (if only they knew) in which they stripped and sold off the parts of luxury cars including AMG cars, but I'm guessing non of your "AMG" friends have posted That ...

I think the 'cars breaking for spares' section says all I need to say on this subject tbh. Have a look at the replys sellers get to their adverts and all becomes clear.

Do me a favour and just try to keep this remotely on topic, and not just turn it into yet another platform to bitch at one another. People say women are bad....
Before anyone wants to get their knickers in a knot, this is not aimed at any one person, it's a few that don't do themselves any favours.
If you want to have a good old argument and slag each other off, pay the membership and go into fight club and crack on.

I just want to add my thought on this.
I have been buying/selling used Impreza parts for nearly 10 years. I haven't been scammed once.
A laptop that I sold for spares or repair on Fleabay on the other hand......
I am also happy to pay the PayPal fee if it is someone that I don't know. Most cases on here though I send the money as a gift and have never had an issue. If it's quite pricey, I will collect so that I can see the condition of the part before I hand over any cash.
To be honest, if someone transfers cash to a strangers account for something advertised on facebay, then they only have themselves to blame when it goes wrong.

The interesting point about this thread is that the op doesn't give examples of scams, let alone give any idea of how many 'I've been scammed' threads led them to make such an absurdly exaggerated statement.
Fwiw looking over the past 2 weeks or so I'd guess that less than 5% of threads are about rip-offs (granted our friends at premises in the NW of England haven't been the subject of any for a month or so).

I would hazard a guess that the Subaru world is no different to ford, vw, older BMWs, in fact any other well established modding scene, my brother in-law is a bmw man and he is always having issues with ebay and he's a rich accountant that also makes a LOT of money off eBay and knows his shģt.
Just this past few weeks he bought a gearbox of ebay and when he went to collect it it was needing a few bits doing so he agreed with the bloke that he would collect it in a weeks time when he gets back of holiday. On his return home he discovered he had been banned from ebay for not paying

This could be true but as you said in your op it's "sad what the subaru scene has become" , maybe in time the merc/amg scene will be the same but as for now, not a good comparison, IMO.

Yeah probably shouldn't have used the AMG thing in the post as it sounds like I am saying it is better and in some ways it isn't. It's just the lack of scamming and ripping people off there is quite noticeable compared to the threads that pop up on here seemingly every week about engine builders having people's cars for 4 years, water damaged gearboxes, people not supplying parts or not supplying the parts as described etc. etc.

I haven't got any facts and figures to back that up, as I'm not a member (or viewer) of many other car related sites, but I base my opinion around what I hear with regards to the likes of ebay, gumtree, even established retailers as opposed to private sellers. All non car related. Based on that, I assume a lot of car scenes have a similar problem.
In some cases, it will be deliberate scamming with the sole intention of ripping someone off, in other cases, it's just poor traders/poor communication/failure to rectify wrongs in a correct and timely manner, but not necessarily a premeditated attempt to 'scam'. Not that it makes it ok to fail to sort problems out.
All that said, when you consider how much trading goes on, just here for an example, I would imagine the percentage of transactions going bad, is fairly small, just the topics stand out. As a general rule (and I use my retail experience here) people are far more inclined to speak out when things go wrong, than to praise when they go right.
Ideal world, nobody would scam another, but the world isn't ideal. I would love nothing more than to never see a thread of that type on here, but that is highly unlikely, sadly. If dedicated marketplaces can't prevent it, forums are not likely to either, no matter what they do to try. Just like life in general, some people are just bad, and will seek to see themselves alright, regardless of the cost to others.

We do seem to go through patches of 'rip-off' threads but if you look at the last few pages of threads there's very few of those (and one is a long-running saga of a guy who apparently doesn't car who he is ripping off or what car they have).
As you say the percentage is very, very low.
How anyone can therefore say 'full' (without simply wanting to be controversial) is strange.
Certain sites will attract it more than others.
E-bay for example because the vast majority of prospective buyers won't really know what to look for etc. They'd see eg. "Subaru STi, not your usual junk" but wouldn't have anything to compare it with, see the nice shiny condition - and buy one with a suspect hg.
SN is a different kettle of fish. What someone doesn't know (or wants to find out) plenty will provide that advice, so the chances of a scammer directly advertising are far lower.
Imo the correct title of this thread would have been either 'Is the Subaru scene full of scammers?" or "Why does the Subaru scene attract scammers?", both of which would allow proper debate.

Scammers are everywhere though and I wouldn't say being stupid is the cause as from personal experience you can still be scammed by someone who had a very good reputation....
