BP or Shell

My understanding is that the likes of tesco add chemicals to their fuels to increase the Ron rating and quality. Hence all that issue tesco had a few years back with cars breaking down shortly after leaving the station.
For me personally, I'd rather buy from a company who specialise in fuel and oil rather than one that specialises in food but sell fuel because it's a money spinner. If I have to pay a few pence more for that privilege then so be it. I don't run my car on a tight budget so it doesn't concern me.
Shell has never giving me any issues so I've no reason to change.

Momentum is produced by Greenergy who are petro-chemical company.
The silicon in the fuel incident did not affect Momentum.
All petrols have certain additives. Shell made a big thing about Vpower keeping the internals clean - petrol alone can't do that.

It's why the missus sticks to Tesco for our food and drink. Shell's bl**dy more expensive for those too.
The other point's valid as well but don't anyone be put off Momentum. If you can't find a Shell garage and a Tesco is around your car is safe (provided that Tesco sells Momentum - some don't, believe it or not).
I wasn't risking anything when I changed the car's diet to V-Power due to a lack of Tesco stores on the M42 a while back.

I run my wrx on both shell and Tesco momentum and I can't tell the difference.
I struggle to believe that anyone actually can 'feel' a difference between the two fuels. Placebo effect in my opinion.

The only Impreza I had an engine problem (it broke) with was religiously run on Shell V Power. (Classic with a 245bhp Ecutek remap)
Never did find out if it was the fuel or it would have happened anyway so I think all you can do is go with what you think 'feels' best.
Current standard classic has been run on BP (local garage still has barbecues in so no coal yet) and feels fine.

I'd think that your current car had been remapped for UK/97.
However, check it out, because if it hasn't you'll end up with the same problem.

Until you get a situation where you're low on fuel, you can't find a Shell and a Tesco (selling Momentum) is around the corner.
If you believe in Shell then use it, no problem with that at all.
But if you run out don't be afraid to put Momentum in.
After all, I'm not afraid to put V-Power in mine if a local Tesco doesn't do Momentum.

It never fails to amaze me how people think that if they don't use their mapped fuel or equivalent, the engine will go pop! Even a well modded engine will be perfectly safe, even on 95 fuel by staying out of boost. Obviously, you would only use such fuel if you get caught out which, in these cars, is easily done. (we've all been there?) Just put the minimum amount in and top up with Vpower or Mom. as soon as you can.

I assumed that people actually mean using it as normal on lower octane but I see the point.
I actually carry a can or two of octane booster. Hopefully I'll never use it but you can never be too careful.
I planned refuelling once, only to find that the local Tesco never even sold petrol, then spent the best part of an hour travelling around the Derby area and was down to my last 30 or so miles (100 from home) before spotting a Shell.
Tbh I'm surprised that the petrol retailers haven't dispensed with anything lower than 99, if only as an excuse to increase income.

I'm glad I don't waste a fortune on shell stuff, but their profits must love everyone who reads the rubbish on the internet

Did BP 102 die?
Was only available near race tracks. Mega expensive.
Remember seeing a demo at Goodwood FOS some years back with a 911 Turbo on rollers & they would swap back and forward the fuels & on 102 it made 50bhp more (10%).
I remember walking past the man with the goody bags many times & still have many key rings, stickers & lanyards.

They aren't though, yes the base fuel may well come from the same refinery but the final product is different. Each company (be it tesco, shell, BP or whoever) add their own additives to that base fuel. Tesco for instance use large amounts of ethanol in their additive whereas shell does not.

BP does 98, high grade fuel.
BUT - if your car is mapped ie. programmed to run on 99, then there is the chance that the ECU will assume you are running on 99 and tell the cylinders to spark at what it thinks is the right time.
In that case, however, the mixture in any particular cylinder won't produce the required explosion/impact on the crank, to keep it in sync.
If it explodes earlier than expected ( 'pre-det') the idea of keeping the crank rotating in the best possible way to maximise the engine's capability is basically er... fcuked.
The lower the octane, the quicker the fuel combusts, and if the controller ie. ECU, doesn't know then you run the risk of timings getting so out that the stresses on the crank/rod etc. break it.

Not saying it's not true or trying to trip anyone up just a genuine question.

We are run like on the V-Power or Tesco T99 and must admit on V-power car has made bit more power and car has been more smooth to drive on T99 and we are always get better MPG with T99
We are have few bad experience with Shell as twice we are filled up the car with bad batch of fuel and on the logs I've seen knocks which we are never seen on V-power,we are run out the V-power and filled up with T99 and with T99 we are never get any knock
Agree Tesco T99 have larger proportion of the ethanol, but as UK/EU regulation only allows 5-10% of Ethanol
But few years back Throney Motorsport has tested all fuels and Tesco Momentum has come on the top
Thanks,Jura

Please have look on this
http://www.fordcapriforum.com/forum/...p?f=10&t=43967
As every fuel on UK pumps must have up to 5% ethanol
I know V-Power is more consistent than Tesco T99
Thanks,Jura

I was going towards Shell but think it's just forum hearsay that one is better than the other, although scoobyclinic say v-power who knows.

We are done on bone stock JDM WRX Wagon around 60 miles with petrol light on,with 2.1L we are done around 50miles and we are stuck for several hours on the Motorway(our fuel gauge never worked after we are converted our wagon to manual )
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
Great link so Shell and Tesco both use ethanol, so whats the difference other than the price, I know Tesco also get there fuel via Greenergy so a big supplier?

Most of mappers can confirm,Shell is more consistent than T99,we are have few issues with the V-power,mainly bad batch fuel
Car with V-power will give you better results,we are always using now Octane booster with Tesco 99 to be 100% sure
With T99 we are get better mileage than V-power not sure why
Thanks,Jura

There are also other additives used in the fuel but obviously each company has their own concoction
Hence why no two fuel suppliers have identical fuel out of the pump.
