Hey all, new person looking for a new car
#32
I had a Type R V4 STI before my newage, that was an awesome car, they are simply amazing machines. They kick a UK classics tail. But they are pretty raw (the V4 was even more so with no abs etc), as a practical everyday car I found it a bit difficult to live with and way too thirsty, so I moved up to my blob.
But if your first drive of an Impreza is in a Type R, you will be BLOWN AWAY.

Its not a wide-track though buddy if thats what you want. The widetrack also has the later dash which is nicer.

Hope Lloydsound doesn't mind me gatecrashing his thread but I have read it with interest being a potential Scooby newbie too...
I have been considering buying a JDM from New Era or SVA imports - seems to me although I might pay a bit more than buying from a Pistonheads private advert, I should get a good car which will have had a full service and belts changed etc plus 12 months warranty
Trinity, do you have any experience of New Era or SVA imports as to what they are like to deal with and buy from?
Thanks

You JDM boys love telling us about why we should all have a JDM car, but to be honest I'm not a massive fan of twinscroll engines and I'm not alone there.
I think the OP needs to look at a few cars and make his mind up for himself.

What makes Subaru a good car is there all round ability, some could even say the best car they make is the wrx for this very reason. The sti has a bit more compromise but for the enthusiast it can be worth it for the extra performance. The jdm cars may just be one step too far, ask yourself this, why has Subaru done better in the uk over the evo, its not because it has better performance but because it's a better daily and spec c jdm etc are one comprises too far.
If the uk had been given the jdm from the start the RRP because of useless crap like the folding mirrors and rear wiper etc would have priced them next to evo's and with the rest of the setup, ie twinscoll the buyer would of been mad not to have considered the evo.
Burbling around having the excitement of a nice turbo on tap and the thrill of boost, not a 8k rpm screamer that sounds like a corsa with a big bore exhaust until you give it hell, save your money and get a car designed for the uk market and roads.
Cars for the most part are for sitting in traffic and picking the kids up from school etc, not all this point to point shìt I keep hearing, someone has been watching too many car reviews.

my own input is, having owned both a newage sti (forged with an SC billet turbo etc) and a JDM STI with just an exhaust and map, the JDM is in another league, its far superior in lots of ways, people just stating the wiper and mirrors are clueless.
Drive one, see the difference the gearbox, quick rack and twinscroll turbo makes around a roads and point to point, why would anyone not want Xenons, better dash, engine, DCCD on 2003/2004 models as additional features as standard? If you buy a car simply for the noise then so be it but most people wouldnt, the burble is subjectively better anyway, 6k-8k rpm with a superbike note is addictive.
Say what you want, the UK car is fantastic, just not quite as fantastic as JDM newage STI, who buys an impreza to take kids to school and sit in traffic? god knows what that comment above was about lol!

Did you really write ' Burbling around having the excitement of a nice turbo on tap and the thrill of boost, not a 8k rpm screamer that sounds like a corsa with a big bore exhaust until you give it hell, save your money and get a car designed for the uk market and roads. in public ? lol The thrill of boost....
Point to point - less lag, on boost constantly, stiffer more balanced suspension, shorter ratios to move faster through the power bands high rpm to gain extra momentum when on boost - oh look, a better point to point car
Evidently it was written by someone who has never driven a JDM, refering back to my original point, JDM envy, whether they admit it or not

Hello boys,
Carnut DOES have a point, all this point to point talk about a UK daily driver makes you all sound like Vin Diesel wanabees
The stark reality is that most with more than one brain cell will spend the vast majority of their time in traffic sub 40mph and doing 70mph on the motorway because above that Subarus drink fuel like it's going out of fashion, which to be fair is not the real issue for me but the range you get from traveling at 90/100mph is.
Also the constant gear changing and the really crap kidney jolting suspension that knocks and needs replacing with of all things budget coilovers
I get the STI thing for those that want to mod and do track days but if the vast majority of what you want to do is commute to and from work over anything more than about 10/15miles and do your shopping and generally pootle about on crappy UK roads then I would seriously consider a WRX.
Cue the WRX haters.
More Uk road friendly suspension so you get to keep your back teeth and your kidneys don't bleed, smaller turbo that's easy to keep on song yet still has more than enough get up and go for real world road driving, and those beautifully longer gear ratio's that combined make it quicker off the mark (when mapped or PPP'd) with a lot less of the clutch pressing and pot stirring of the notchy 6 speed that takes place in the STI.
If however you don't do many miles in the real world and want a point to point ballistic missile then it's JDM all the way.
1. Classic STI Type R or RA
2. Bug eye S202
3. Blob Spec C
4. Blob Jdm STI. not really ballistic but has potential to be.
5. UK STI. slow off the mark, crap suspension and handling and you'll end up modding / fixing it's flaws and spend more than the above cost out the box.
Or the thinking mans daily, lightly modded or PPP WRX, needs the handling and brakes sorting but costs half of what the above do, yet is just as capable in the real world on the road, which is why my daily is a Blob WRX Wagon PPP with AP 4 pot's and a few handling mods.
Just to add some balance.
P.S, My other car is a V3 STI Type R.

The fellow who owns that advertised it on here asking opinions of whether he sould keep it or not..so there may be a few more details floating about.
As I said, the Type R is simply an awesome machine.
But if you want a little refinement, something not as gas hungry and a bit more comfortable the newage is the way to go, but if you havent driven a Type R before, its going to blow you away way more than a newage.
