How do you find yourself a co-driver? Is it a case of they advertise or do you find your own?

Or maybe your having problems finding people who want to be your co-driver, given your recent history, I wonder why.
Wasn't his fault , I decide the notes , it wasn't the double caution 2 right that was the problem , it's the long right over crest that was long , long , means it's a double length bend , which is why I dropped to 5th , and would have been down the gearbox more going into the 2 left if it was correct , the note should have been 6 right over crest slowing to double caution 2 right , swapping long to slowing , we would have made the bend as I would have been braking and down the box on the crest, and able to take the 2 right.

Got plenty of people wanting to sit with me , having a crash or two comes with the territory , you drive fast , it will eventually bite you on the *** , would take a lot more than this to put us rally idiots off lol

You get to meet people on rallies , nav's regularly sit with many different drivers , if your stuck the rally forums have dating pages for drivers or nav's looking for people.

I try to stick with the same people doing events that rely on pacenotes as you get used to each other , or at least someone who I know of that does well with others.
Single venue rallies on airfields are not as important as you are just given a drawn map of the event , so you can learn the event within a stage or two , although they do change the stages slightly , you get the gist of it , so you can use nav's with less experience as you can see the stage as it's just made of cones or / and tyres , but it's a starting point for nav's to pick up experience before going onto the bigger rallies

Well that's me lost, I'd be worse than useless as a NAV it's all Dutch to me, coupled with my intense fear of being driven fast by other people, I think i'd spend more time in hedges and fields than you do if I were to become involved in Rallying.

I don't know how you do it, driving almost blind as it were, I'm a half decent driver amongst enthusiasts but only on a track and I need to take the time to learn it before I have the ***** to go for it. I also like to make sure everything is going well with the car before I drop the hammer, no way could I get in a car and just go for it from the off like you do.

Hat off to both of you.

Thats a fair whack!!

To be honest even though it's a short video, some nice driving there especially going threw the "deceptive crossroads"

keep up the good work and you'll be back rallying soon.

Cheers , but as with most things , with experience it does get easier to understand , and drive off notes , the hardest part I found is keeping your concentration levels up listening and acting on every single note , especially when stages go for just under 20 miles , that's what Colin McRae was very very good at , he would be having notes called 3 or 4 bends ahead , I can't do that !

I'm back out rallying 2 weeks on Saturday in my Mk 2 Golf , hopefully get the Subaru fixed in time to test it in pembrey on the rally between Christmas Day and New Year's Day , it's got active front and centre diffs and there is an issue to fix , so should get the box and damaged repaired in time

Cheers Ian

I love the effortless and seemless mental acceleration the WRC engine/sequential box gives. Crazy.

Ian, did the WRC Impreza run, effectively, an 'off the shelf' turbo (with the restrictor fitted). Or is it some works' blueprinted hybrid job?

Also, didn't the the WRC 97-00 cars get the larger (less restrictive) 38mm restrictor? (I think the 93-96 Gp.A cars had a 34mm job, right?).

And how did Prodrive get the the disproportionate amount of torque from the engine (IRO 420lb ft IIRC?). Is it chiefly by simply running 'huge' boost pressure and A/L?

Sorry for the 20 questions lol

Although mine changes gear very fast , its not a sequential , mines only a H pattern one , still very good though

The turbo's used changed as time went on , my car uses a standard VF22 core , but with modified inlet and exhaust housings , only because of the restrictor on the inlet , and the short quick release exhaust , the later cars ran some fancy very expensive turbo's.

They have never used a 38mm restrictor , Gp N used to be 32mm , they have now gone onto 33mm , and Gp A and WRC's have always ran 34mm , by having a 34mm hole in the front of the turbo , you can generate plenty of boost low down , mine runs 1.7 bar , the later cars as much as 2.2 , but then above 5 k revs the restrictor won't flow enough air to retain the boost , which is why you see sill torque figures and low hp , they were supposed to restrict them to 300 hp , mines about 320 , and the later cars 340-350.

They also run very high compression for a turbo engine , which makes them a lot more responsive from low revs , mine doesn't have anti lag , they put anti lag back on the year after mine when they used fly by wire throttle.

Was sent a copy of some outside footage just before our crash

I've tried a bit of everything over the years (through experience day type things) and I have to say the day spent rallying a mk2 escort was some of the most intense driving I've ever done. We weren't using proper pace notes but you're driving purely off the instructions from the guy in the passenger seat and it really is something else.

Have to say it's something that I would love to do again.

Oops, my memory is rubbish - couldn't even recall the H-box from your vid!

My bad - yeah 32 to 34 (not 34 to 38 - just another memory thing lol).

Yeah, I do recall the those bhp figures - despite the 'ceiling' ruling. Pretty much par for the course for the rest of the competition too, IIRC.

Yeah been on a couple of rally school days too, some of which has come in handy once or twice one of the days I went on one bloke had a big off with a couple of rolls included, all the tree's put me off a bit though, but it's a great experience to have sliding around a bit of woodland, made me realise i'm a track driver, I'll take kitty litter and armco over tree's every time.
