I noticed the fuel light is on and the gauge looks like it barely moved, what fuel did you put in it and did you give it some beans from cold when you "went to the shops"

In all fairness to the seller, it's not really his fault. The car wouldn't of been knocking it's bollocks off when the OP went to see it, as if it was he wouldn't of bought it.
I'm afraid if someone came and bought my car then rang me a couple of days later saying the engine is knackered he'd get told to jog on.

Private sale so you have very little chance of getting any money back from him unless you can find evidence that he knew it was about to go and you win in court If it was a trade sale it'd be a different story.

Good luck getting it sorted.

I think the op said it was advertised as a trade sale but when he contacted the seller about the engine, the seller then said it was private.

It may well of had the faintest of knocks that may sound normal to an uneducated ear, a long motorway journey would be sure to finish it off. As for the car loosing all power and cutting out and then requiring a boost to restart sounds like a separate issue so theres an equal chance he was sold a lemon, as not impossible the timing is rather unfortunate to say the least, if it hasnt been abused on the drive home of course.

Get a link up or a copy of the original add because as u mentioned that he dealt in subaru's then if thats true it very likely somebody on here would of had past dealings with him and may be able to vouch for their integrity.

If you have no joy and have to go down the route of repairing it yourself then you could take a risk on a second hand engine for around £400-£500 and then fitted for less than £200 as long as everything else is in order. Where abouts are you ??

If he's a trader and the guy can prove it the seller has little chance, where did you buy it from?

So you met the seller half way? Unless the seller trailered it there I can't imagine he had any idea either. Don't drive it anymore as you're likely to fire a con rod at pedestrians.
Best bet for now is to try to find a cheap second hand long engine and someone to fit it for you.

I've driven a car with no alternator belt, a guy jump started me with his range rover had power point in bumper, then drove home about 6 miles fine.

think still needs small amount of electrical power to drive car if alternat or is knackered.

You could try these guys for a second hand engine, he's got loads of them, and all sorts of used spares, he imports from Japan. Nice bunch of guys too! www.japperformanceparts.co.uk

I don't imagine so. It's round the corner from me and they pass their engines on to someone else. Besides, they'd probably want £9m for one.

Really? you sure, i was there 3 days ago seemed very keen to sell stock, in fact my brother in law has bought loads of second hand stuff for his evo. I know he does send engines away to be rebuilt but I don't see why he wouldn't sell you a s/h engine. Might be worth a call?

Er...not this one lol. They sell pretty much everything else but not the engines. A set of V3/4 heads are about £400, so an engine would be upwards of a grand I'd imagine.
