S202 in place of my Type R - convince me
#31
I agree and I would love to own one but I just wouldn't be passionate about it, there is just something so special about a Type R, it's not just about how good a car is at what it does, because actually I don't think the Type R is the quickest way to get from point A to point B as evidenced by my quick blast 50 mile country route, even my lardy pretty standard wagon can out do it in some places and we are talking PPP vs 330bhp.
For me it's the whole package and how it makes me feel and there is no new age that can give me that, the only thing that I can liken the feeling to is a head strong horse on a cross country course, and the two really are very alike, just when you think you've got the hang of it the bloody thing try's to kill you.
I think you'd regret it once the initial shine wore off, there is also the fact that when something is too good at what it does the speeds start to get silly, which is fine if you live close to the Ring or Donnington like me and can stump up for track days every month to get the use out of it, but for the road it's just stupid.
But hey it's your money.

without having experience with either a type R or S202 I can only give my own opinion on aesthetics and what I've read. But I agree with Ditch pretty much. 53's S202 is a smart looking example, but lets face it in very few peoples eyes is a bugeye considered a good looking car, and I question the benefit of having a car so discreet that it can go un-noticed as a weekend/fun car..
Bonesetter you may need to reconsider your valuation of your current car, from memory yours is a very very clean car and a WRX, not the STi WRX variety, which might put some off who want all the toys but it's also extremely rare. I think 5k would be underselling it significantly.
Finally, in my opinion a Type R is pretty much as good as it gets in its current (but rising) price bracket, but once you start looking at around 15k, there's far more competition, and unless your an hardcore Subaru fan there are other cars out there arguably more special than even an S202 for the money.

Another thing to consider is what sort of mods could you get done to your Type R or a new age for similar outlay, I know there is a certain attraction to owning a special edition such as the S202 and it will hold it's value but so would something like a Spec C, you could buy or build a lot of car for the money.
Agree with Banny, if your going to have one it needs to be original otherwise whats the point.

the s202 is all about the originality, if you want to mod an impreza get an sti as once you mess about with the s202 its loosing value.
being a modder id take a type r and chuck some money at it, but not everyone likes to
modify cars.
i dont like bugs at all but id say the s202 is the better more capable drive of the two. but having driven a type r they are very raw and fun to drive.

Mine could be for sale to the right person The 202 drives like a classic but doesn't feel as agricultural. It's not the departure from a classic like a normal newage... it's immensely chuckable and the power delivery is awesome. You get a lot of unseen extras with the 202 that you only really notice crawling underneath it. It's very much a sum of it's parts

Both great drivers cars IMO just depends what you want the most.
The 202 is all about what's under the skin where as the R is just raw and a bit bonkers.
Perhaps the R is the best classic ever made and the 202 the new Newage ever made.
You decide
I'd be quite partial to a white one myself

However I fear 15k wouldn't quite be enough anymore, their prices have really gone mad over the last 5 years.

Lancia delta intergrale EVO would be on my list, car's don't come much more special than those. And unless you've owned one you won't know just how good they are.

Maybe for a very very low mile evo 2 Maz. Average miler earlier evo 1's can still be had for sub 20 I think.
It is mad how prices have gone with these though. Wasn't too long ago my father sold his low mile Lord blue evo 1 for 12 grand....

It's gone crazy. Quite a few are being imported from Japan as they've been kept in such good nick. You should have kept your dad's, would have been worth a lot more now especially in blue.

For a little more comfort perhaps an RS4 (the proper 4.2 V8 one!), or maybe a Maserati 3200/4200.
And as an oddball choice a Renault Clio V6 :-)
Obviously it's a personal thing and to some nothing mentioned here might come above an S202, but there are certainly options!
