I can get 400+ from my WRX with the standard (Hawk) box, some are running 450+. You'd have to change the STI standard turbo and add ancillary upgrades to do that sort of power in an STI regardless. Once you are talking big power it matters less what you started with as you're changing lots of bits anyway.

But yes, you obviously get a big head start in terms of braking and handling with the STI and if you can afford / insure one it makes much more sense to start there.
you cant get 400 bhp from your five speed if you use it correctly so you need ANOTHER 2k for an sti box...
the insurance argument is also b0llocks as to insure it correctly you need to declare mods and that puts it over and above an sti to insure too.

Some of you lot really should read and take time to ingest the OP before pressing the gas.

O/P already has a WRX and was somewhat under whelmed by the standard car and 225 bhp

No surprise there.

There's someone in America that pops up in them 1320 vids running over 700bhp in a blob with standard box (could even be whp) and races/drags it regularly.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could kick the shìt out of a wrx hawk box with 400bhp.

but then again you spent weeks arguing the 2.5 engine wasnt flawed so i doubt your opinion really counts for much on here

It shocks me that the age old WRX vs STI argument still gets heated discussion and multiple page threads. There must be a thread like this every 3 months lol.
My only thoughts are have anyone done the maths, IE shown the sum of the parts that an STI has over a WRX?. And what it would cost to sell WRX parts and buy STI - 4 pots and discs for Brembos etc etc?

Those must be the ones that sit around for months without anyone calling up, if you pay more than 3k for a 2003 wrx you need slapping hard (and thats with all the service history).

Well I paid £4k for my WRX Wagon PPP with AP4 pots 3 1/2 yrs ago enthusiast owned with 92k mostly motorway, still going at 1011k , looking to replace the engine around 120/130k because ill be headed in the direction of 400+ in the next year or so, but there is nothing wrong with it.

Gearbox will be either a 6 speed or a 5 speed dog box just depends what's available when it comes to purchase time.

But mines a Wagon so I have a good excuse, If they made a Spec C RAR in a Wagon I'd have one of those.

Who said it was a 5 speed, it's a blob sti but still impressive power. He has said he was just going to run with the standard box until it goes but is yet to happen.

I'm not saying you can't just that i don't see them, where have you seen GOOD blob wrxs for £3000?
In fact, you say £3000 for one with good milage and full history so what can you get a average one with not so good history for.

Out of curiosity would you run the original box until it went?

If a wrx was to crash into the side of your car that would be a good wrx.

especially a 2.5 with some good torque to make the most of it.

Would it be one with a 2.5 engine you argued about not being flawed then changed username?

good point, all you really need is a 2nd hand PPP kit. these car where made for that kit, 220 in a heavy car is always going to be slow, the small change in power transforms the car. I drove my wrx for a year and then did the work so I had experience in a performance car for insurance.

Even the incredible STI needs the ppp style upgrade to make it any good.

discs and pads is a easy upgrade.

As the car would have to stay MOT friendly the downpipe would have to be replaced with a sports cat version, thus further increasing the price it would cost. Also, I'm not a fan of increasing power before touching the infamously crap WRX brakes.

I appreciate your input but if I was going to start modding the car, I'd rather save my money and buy an STI.

Thanks,

[yank accent] 700 ALL WHEEL HORSEPOWER!! [/yank accent]

Probably 350 UK BHP then

But to answer the OP's question.. Yes they are a lot different, the Sti is sharper, faster, more focused, better equipped and better looking.

Mock you may, the Americans have a far bigger tuning scene than we do and they've largely been ahead of us for a long time.

Well there are people on here who say they do use it "correctly" and are running 400 - 460. I'm guessing the guys at scooby clinic have some experience too? I'll keep you posted

I'd give up worrying about Dan. I don't disagree with him on most of what he says but he just spouts the same old thing like a broken record and then calls anyone that doesn't agree with him, an idiot.

He must have said the same thing 10 times on this thread alone.

It is a shame as for someone that has his head screwed on, he is coming across as a troll.
