That's an fd2 type r, will be over double your budget, you can get a dc5 integra or a jdm ep3 type r for about your budget, if I had £8000 I'd buy an evo, maybe an 8, I've even seen an evo 10 sell for under 10k
If your into track days get the evo, dc5 or Megane rs250

I should say,i would like it to be turbo or supercharged. I am trying to go more standard but i know what im like and if i get bored its easy to tune/map a turbo or supercharger rather than n/a.
I might look at evos but again its 4x4

Just out of interest.. What's the reason that you've "had enough of 4wd" ?
I've had Imprezas for the last 12 years and there's nothing that comes close for me. I've been looking at other stuff again recently but all I see is people on here or MLR (let's face it a similar car) coming back to the fold, even owning some flash expensive super saloons looking for a humble Impreza or Evo again.
My mates always give me the economy line until I do the numbers in front of them. It usually shows their 'cheap 2nd car' or 'newer cheaper to run car' to be even more of a money drain once you factor in the depreciation of some turdy model lol.
I would hazard a guess after 10 years you will miss the grip.
I've driven hundreds of cars in my job and there's a reason I drive an old MY00 STI V6

Jameswrx, you sound the same as me, I too have driven more cars than I can remember through work. Like the OP I have looked at what else is out there and TBH there is nothing that excites me other than an old 911 or Z3 M Coupe, neither of which come close with price, practicality or grip in adverse conditions.
So 2.1 stroker it is.

I did the switch to M3 and came back, admittedly circumstances changed though.
I serious advise you to think about what your saying, fwd will seem like crap compared to what your used to.
Why avoid rwd though?

My brothers had an Octavia vrs with the TSi lump in it for four or five years now, no issues and he loves it. Boot is huge on it as well.
Why do you say steer clear of the duratec engine when someone mentioned focus St?
They have a volvo T5 engine, not a ford engine (why they are so juicy).

Plus servicing is dirt cheap! and you get really well looked after at the dealership.
Im ordering a new VRs in black, estatenext year and brand new its less than 24k with loads of toys added
I test drove a superb the other day and that was really nice! the yeti is a nice car too
How about a astra vxr? they are easily tunable and still look nice !

My boss had the diesel vrs DSG estate on a 58 plate, and as nice a car that it was, and quite rapid for a diesel, he did have a few issues with it, none of which my brother has had with his 56 plate petrol.
Funnily enough, my brother had the cambelt replaced on his, it cost him £200. He was told by the guy that did the work that had it been a Passat with the same engine it would have cost nearly double because it is harder to get at/more work involved.

Reliability seems to be a big problem with hot Renaults. I had a new Clio sport and over the 10 months i owned the car it went back in 11 times for warranty until i just got sick of it.
I would definitely go back but would have to be a newish one, possibly with manufacturer warranty.
Never heard about the ST being bad on fuel before, my brother had one for a while which I used a few times (used it for a holiday doing about 1000 miles) and thought it was quite good on fuel relatively speaking. I didn't find it to be as fun as the Renaults but more than the Golf's and the best all rounder/compromise. They seem to be easy to tune and I'm sure that they will follow the same pattern as other Focus and be very reliable. They can also be found quite cheap with some good extras such as sat nav etc.

for 8k I would be looking at the petrol version if I was the op. I would only entertain getting the diesel if my budget could stretch to one that was still covered by warranty until the time I came to replace it, as I presume is the situation that you are in.

Focus ST with the 2.5 Volvo lump in it, they are great engines. Used to have a T5 in my S40. If it's standard you'll see mpg around 30ish, mapped pushing 300 (safest max number really) and you'll probably average 20-22, same as my hawk STi. Do love an angry 5 pot!!

Why fwd IMO pointless with anything over around 220bhp so if your looking at Scirocco, Golf, Leon etc after a map it's just pointless they can't get the power down properly and the torque steer is stupid. Unless you for something that has a trick diff like the Focus RS
I've owned Seat Cupra R, 4 MKIV Golf 1.8T's and my wife owns a Seat Leon Cupra FR and I just find them sound quite dull and always spinning the wheels.
What about a BMW M3 E46?
The only fwd I would be considering is a DC5 Integra (Focus RS I would but it's outs of your budget) I've owned one and there great.....just not as good as the DC2 Integra

I had an early model V40 T4. Awesome car for what it was, basically the same engine (and gearbox) as the T5 engine, minus a cylinder. Mine being an early phase 1 model had the strongest of the lot with standard forged internals, and they could quite happily handle a lot more power than the standard 200 brake. Accelerated faster than a T5 out the box as well due to being much lighter.
I could never get much more than 25 to the gallon even if I tickled the throttle.
Miss that car!

Probably could have gone down the road of white line arb kits, trying different tyres etc but it was nearing 140k so didn't seem worth it, although three years on dvla website still shows it as being taxed.

I did say that fwd cars need a decent diff like the frs.....there won't be many for sub £8k and if there is I'm not sure I'd want it, I would never buy the cheapest car in the market normally means it's a dog, I tend to look middle range to higher if you want lower miles.

i just think fwd is easier to live with on a daily basis.you don't have to launch or ride the clutch every time i want to get out of a turning or away from the lights a bit nippy. I feel im always booting the scooby to get anywhere. 4x4 isn't the best off the line without getting it right, plus you have to be going really fast to get a buzz out of it in the bends aswell. I understand fwd will spin with too much throttle but a decent diff should help that and i kind off miss a little wheel spin from time to time anyway i used to own cavalier sri's/gsi's when i was younger (i doubt anything nowdays spins like them)

Which was one of the reasons that I sold the above car. Just far too much torque steer, and on a wet road a focus diesel would leave it behind on the exit of a roundabout, coz it would either spin like mad with tc turned off, or would still try and spin while the tc light flashed like mad with it turned on. That and the fuel consumption which was worse than the scooby.
