Jameswrx, you sound the same as me, I too have driven more cars than I can remember through work. Like the OP I have looked at what else is out there and TBH there is nothing that excites me other than an old 911 or Z3 M Coupe, neither of which come close with price, practicality or grip in adverse conditions.
So 2.1 stroker it is.

My brothers had an Octavia vrs with the TSi lump in it for four or five years now, no issues and he loves it. Boot is huge on it as well.
Why do you say steer clear of the duratec engine when someone mentioned focus St?
They have a volvo T5 engine, not a ford engine (why they are so juicy).

I can't remember what i read, only too stay clear of duratec and others on this thread say because of liners.

Ive had a skoda for 2 years now (the old shape 62 plate), the TDi lump is fantastic when remapped, Keeps up with my mates 330d bm with ease
Plus servicing is dirt cheap! and you get really well looked after at the dealership.
Im ordering a new VRs in black, estatenext year and brand new its less than 24k with loads of toys added
I test drove a superb the other day and that was really nice! the yeti is a nice car too
How about a astra vxr? they are easily tunable and still look nice !
I did always love my vauxhalls but someone i dont like has a vxr astra lol.

for 8k I would be looking at the petrol version if I was the op. I would only entertain getting the diesel if my budget could stretch to one that was still covered by warranty until the time I came to replace it, as I presume is the situation that you are in.
My boss had the diesel vrs DSG estate on a 58 plate, and as nice a car that it was, and quite rapid for a diesel, he did have a few issues with it, none of which my brother has had with his 56 plate petrol.
Funnily enough, my brother had the cambelt replaced on his, it cost him £200. He was told by the guy that did the work that had it been a Passat with the same engine it would have cost nearly double because it is harder to get at/more work involved.

Reliability seems to be a big problem with hot Renaults. I had a new Clio sport and over the 10 months i owned the car it went back in 11 times for warranty until i just got sick of it.
I would definitely go back but would have to be a newish one, possibly with manufacturer warranty.
Never heard about the ST being bad on fuel before, my brother had one for a while which I used a few times (used it for a holiday doing about 1000 miles) and thought it was quite good on fuel relatively speaking. I didn't find it to be as fun as the Renaults but more than the Golf's and the best all rounder/compromise. They seem to be easy to tune and I'm sure that they will follow the same pattern as other Focus and be very reliable. They can also be found quite cheap with some good extras such as sat nav etc.

Why fwd IMO pointless with anything over around 220bhp so if your looking at Scirocco, Golf, Leon etc after a map it's just pointless they can't get the power down properly and the torque steer is stupid. Unless you for something that has a trick diff like the Focus RS
I've owned Seat Cupra R, 4 MKIV Golf 1.8T's and my wife owns a Seat Leon Cupra FR and I just find them sound quite dull and always spinning the wheels.
What about a BMW M3 E46?
The only fwd I would be considering is a DC5 Integra (Focus RS I would but it's outs of your budget) I've owned one and there great.....just not as good as the DC2 Integra

Which was one of the reasons that I sold the above car. Just far too much torque steer, and on a wet road a focus diesel would leave it behind on the exit of a roundabout, coz it would either spin like mad with tc turned off, or would still try and spin while the tc light flashed like mad with it turned on. That and the fuel consumption which was worse than the scooby.
Probably could have gone down the road of white line arb kits, trying different tyres etc but it was nearing 140k so didn't seem worth it, although three years on dvla website still shows it as being taxed.[/QUOTE]
I don't mind a bit of wheel spin

I did say that fwd cars need a decent diff like the frs.....there won't be many for sub £8k and if there is I'm not sure I'd want it, I would never buy the cheapest car in the market normally means it's a dog, I tend to look middle range to higher if you want lower miles.

Haven't really heard of that issue on the normal T5 engine, only the 300bhp s60/v70R, which is different. I would be surprised if it was a common issue, T5 engine has been around for twenty years.

Im a pretty experienced driver and have owned front, rear and four wheel drive cars over the 18yrs I've been on the road. I've done ferrari and lambo days and a drift day or two. The fwd is just easier to live with day to day.

Same engine so I suppose it's prone to the same issues, my brother hasn't had any issues yet though. The one scare he did have was he thought the head gasket might be on the way out because of a mayonnaise like build up under the oil cap. I told him to get a sniff test done, but it was probably condensation where his missus uses it to drive short distance to work, which proved to be the case.
