What is this liner problem anyway? Is it cylinder walls and if so,how is this fixed? Do people replace the liners or just get another block?
5 pot Volvo engine - liners crack, my sons cracked on No3 maybe because it the middle and the hottest. Blocks can be fixed but it's not cheap. Usually a new bottom end is the way to go. Prevention methods exist have a look at dreamscience website

Could buy a mint Clio Williams - 1000kg, 45mpg and wipes the floor with the 172 and 182 at the strip.

Exhaust, decat, filter and map and you have TYPE R bhp/ton, strip it and you'll hit 13's.

One of the good things about Subaru is they are easy to get round corners and respond well to being grabbed by the scruff of the neck. Hot hatchs/fwd on the other hand require more skill and finesse (unless your exploiting lift off over steer ).

IMO the more effort you put in, the more fun you get out.

p.s Have you ever noticed that there is always a couple of fwd hot hatches in the running for drivers car of the year by the different magazines along side supercars etc.
Adjust your driving style how? By backing of the throtttle before your run wide into the kerb? Drive a rwd car and you know how a car should handle. Front wheels free to do the steering power to the rear.

A BMW won the BTCC this year but why not every year? (Fwd has more success in recent years )

It's not all about how much power you have and how fast you can go round a corner, why not consider the fun factors and that cars are best when you're pushing the limits and not holding back in a rwd because it might kill you.

There are people who have far more experience and skill than any SN member, and it's those who rave about the hot hatch fwd market.

Haven't clicked on the links, but Harris is a BMW man I believe, think Plato likes his Porsches, then you've got the top gear boys, Clarkson with all manner of AMG Mercs, Captain Slow and his Fezza 430, Hammond Porsche, Morgan, Dodge Charger etc. Most racers go for something like a 911, so no, not a lot of them would rush out and get an RS focus over something rear wheel drive.

What has Harris got? Thought he was into BMW and Alpina.
Just because Plato races them, doesn't mean he prefers them, think he's a Porsche man.

Ofcourse, im sure they don't but people like Clackson and Captin slow still have cars such a small Fiats and Focus etc for buzzing about in.

But hey, if were talking 430 money then I wouldn't be going out to buy a Focus etc, but I thought were taking fun cars for the average person.

We were, then you provided links to people saying they rave about the fwd hot hatches, yet most of them have rwd cars.
Nothing wrong with fwd hot hatches, they have their place and are very capable, but for the purists rwd is the way to go.

Any who, quick google search
Jason Plato, Porsche 911 turbo (in 2010, not sure what he has now but I guess it's not an 09 Focus)
Chris Harris, traded in his own personal Porsche for a Ferrari 599gtb (in 2012, cause he couldn't get a loaner to test!) . . . . So I was a little bit wrong about Harris.

One of Harris's favourite cars that HE owns is a 2cv, its not all about how fast you can go as ive said, it can be about fun.

Im not saying that fwd is better or worse than rwd, 4wd, or what ever wd. Just because a car is rwd doesn't make it "pure". There are better balanced fwd cars out there than some rwd and lets be clear, lots of rwd cars aren't actually rwd. The power may go to the rear but with all the esp and traction control etc etc theres a bit more to it.

Quick Reply: 8k budget new car???
