Is this really the sort of nation you want the UK to be?

I heard that Germany has taken in 30,000 Syrian refugees
Apparently we have taken in less than a 100
And I bet they have fewer food banks too
Makes you think!!

I think the media arent helping the case of those who need to use foodbanks, every programme about benefits shows a rough couple with a number of kids, no job, a tiny council house, a massive dog, chain smoking and drinking strong lager at all hours of the day. I really don't think most are like that.

The question is though whether chopping foreign aid will make any real long lasting difference to these people. I don't see them any more worthy than those suffering starvation in less developed nations.

If the UK was a person that person would be totally bankrupt. Any non-essential expenditure should be cut, otherwise we'll just hit a brick wall and the government will be unable to pay public sector workers and pensions etc.

But UK total income comes nowhere near covering UK expenditure - we are living in fantasy land - a deficit in the region of £100,000,000+ per year, and we already have debts of £1.7trillion and on top of this liabilities of far more (payouts for public sector pensions, health care as people live longer - all these will increase while income reduces over time due to aging population).

I had a mortgage that far exceeded my income and with that income managed my household expenses like countless others, but I still donated to charity. The principle is still the same.

Maybe you'll answer this question then, at what point in the UK economy would you deem it fit for it to contribute to foreign aid?

I'd like to see the answer as it sounds like snake oil to me.

Oh and before you start I have no mortgage, no loans and no credit card balances. And yes I own my own home!

Obviously I can't pay off my debt in one go, I manage my debt in monthly installments, and yes I had to make some cutbacks and at times borrowed a little more, but still didn't stop me from donating to charities.

Well good for you, not all of us have been so fortunate as you as to have never had the need to ever borrow money to always live within your means, or have an income/savings to allow you buy everything outright.

Money being sent as 'aid' is pretty much trade bribes. India doesn't need our Aid however we NEED their trade!
Anyway back to the topic.
A very interesting thread indeed.
I feel that in order to make things better we need a change. This change needs to be made to the 'psyche' of the British people of all colours, religions, races, etc.
First of all we need to accept that we are no longer as important as we once were.
Secondly we need to pretty much revolutionise our school education system. Our education system should include education on how to manage money, look after a house and keep it free of mould, being houseproud, how to clean, look after children, eat, cook, clean your ****.... pretty much the whole shebang!
Folk do not like being dirty, mismanaging their money, not knowing how to look after the house, family or garden. These things need to be taught at a primary level and any thoughts/notions of entitlement should be put to the side. People need to understand that they must be able to get on with their neighbours. 'I don't care what people think of me' should not be an option.
Enough of the self centred selfishness we witness on a daily basis. Enough of parents spoiling the crap out of their children and teaching them to be a **** in the disguise of 'looking after yourself'. We need a change and we need it quick!
How about teaching people how to talk? I'm shocked at how many school leavers cannot converse! It is bloody scarry. They cannot talk, do not know how to answer a phone and are unable to put their point across without going into a strop, swearing or mumbling.
There was a point i was trying to make but i ended up in a rant... sorry

Cars - I own a 10yo Merc and a 10yo Mazda, but I own them. I could have gone for C63 on finance, but f**k that. I wasn't brought up to think debt and credit is a good thing and I know for some there is no issue, but for me you save up and buy what you want, not plunge into some credit agreement every time the whim takes you.
I am convinced if more thought like that we'd be far better off as a country, but that's just me!

I have said this many times on here, educate people for the REAL WORLD that they are going to face once they leave the state brain washing system, not some ideological bollax that's of no use what so ever to 80% of the population. It's the main reason the UK is fcuked.

It's not about being fortunate, it's about living within your means. I have probably got what most of you London lovers would call a Northern sh1thole of a house, but at least I own it. I bought it on a 10 year mortgage that I could pay easily and got it done as quick as possible.
