jlanng - tkd is more legwork, wing chun is more upper body (arms).

I did running, cycling, rugby as a kid, so had strong legs. If you do swimming and weightlifting you will have a stronger upper body. Leg arts were developed by those living in the hills and mountains, arm arts (?) were developed by those working the rice paddies.

One of my friends stopped tkd after a knee injury, took up wing chun instead. Whatever suits you.

You don't have to be able to do the splits for tkd, a lot of those who can get lazy in their technique, but suppleness helps. If you are going to be enthusiastic it helps if your knees are in good nick.

yep, Seike Juku Karate - 4 years - 3 kyu - going for Brown belt then gave up, keep meaning to get back into it.

Also tried Muay Thai and Lau Gar kung fu for a few years.

Gave up karate after two broken ribs, a knockout and a busted toe

Fancy a go at Silat or Wing Chun next - anyone know of a good school in the Notts area?

Want to learn Silat? Go to Malaysia. Don't go to the big school or classes as its no different to TKD and mainstream martial arts. Go to a village in the outskirts and ask one of the old Gurus to teach you. When you finished your training, you'll have the power of a Jedi and can use the force push quite easily. Of course training will take about 30 - 40 years or something.

LOL Katana!

The problem I always have is finding a school that teaches it for the arts sake and not for either a)making the most money they can from their students or b)trying to get you to fight in the national championships

The trouble with this sort of thing, though, is that a "measured response" isn't easy. You're either having to think about what you're doing all the time in which case you may just be in over your head or it's all automatic in which case the other guy is going to get badly hurt before you've even thought about it. Either way there are consequences to be considered.

FWIW, I never carry a weapon in the car. If it came to that I'd let 'em take the damn' thing. It's mine and I love it but I'm not going to kill someone or risk getting hurt for it. Let the tracker sort it out...

Wing Chun is good for blocking & countering. Also known as Hong Kong street fighting. Its a practical & scientific system that has no refinements of good taste.Just quick, sharp and to the point.

Sticking hands(Chi sao)teaches close up reaction to attackers every move.Hands & arms only.Watch a higher grade do it blind-fold against a sighted adversary.Quite impressive.

Also work on the wooden dummy(mook jong)conditions hands,wrists & forearms.Well worth a look Mike.

Shotokan Karate for too long about 7years... on and off due to work.. currently one below black belt and cannot get to train enough due to work (again) to get the damn black belt.

Trying Kung foo next week as it is nearer where I am currently living / working in the week so hopefully I might be able to commit more time.. the hours drive each way to Karate just makes getting there in time difficult etc..

>>>Terry o'neill<<<

Ah, someone who knows the name of a "real" trad martial artist. Too many fancy freestylers around these days, who don't know where the roots come from!

With people like Terry, Frank and Jim Brennan (awsome)...

Been doing judo up til 25 Kg and just before orange belt we moved.

Now going back to Kung Fu after almost two years off (work socks, life is a beach and bitches bitch). It's a very young stile and incorporates techniques based upon experiences in the streets of post war Hawaii.

ME!

Since I was seven (23years on and off)

Shotokan Karate (my dad knew Terry O'Neill and Frank Brennan)

Did Wing Chun for a while which led me into JKD which I still do (9 years), tending more towards the groundfighting (UFC style) currently under Larry Hartsell, original student of Bruce Lee. Now incorporating bits from Sombo too.

Also Kenpo Ju Jitsu for about 5 years now.

Ah-so

It doesn't matter what art you do its all about how hard your sifu is. I was taught wing chun by james sinclair who is hard as nails and would 'ave any of your teachers without breaking into a sweat.

Beatle,
Isn't ishinryu a style similar to kykoshinkai.

As for "Hard men" in martial arts,no doubt there are many, and i know quite a few,Sensei O'Neill and the late Gary Spiers, etc, but is this really what martial arts is about,it's easy to say i know someone who is "harder" than you or him,but then as most true martial artists know, there are a few point's on the body, that people can be "taken out" with!!
(This should get a few reactions!!)

"late Gary Spiers"

Has he expired?! I didn't know that - don't keep up with martial press anymore. (Find I get bored with too many "my styles better" letters, and Bruce Lee coulda had so and so).

Gary S was rather involved with cleaning up bad dudes up north. Real life Marvel: The Punisher. Be interested to know how he died? Anyone?

Cheers
