coilover recomendations £500-ish
#31
the spring rate is what makes the coilovers softer not the coilovers themselves.
so even expensive coilovers give a decent ride with softer springs.
bcs are poor quality poorly made coilovers and not up to driving on either road or track.
they rust and fall apart under road use and are too bouncy and knock.
a far far better option is standard sti shocks and lowering springs.

Well beings i said £500ish goes to show im not in a position to throw £1500 on coilovers. Im not a race car driver just want to have the best of what i can afford. If HSD are the best i can afford then so be it. Maybe 3 years from now il be posting comments saying its worth putting more money and not getting hsd/bc's. Both points are valued.

Ive read lots of articles saying theyre pretty much a must. I want to join a time attack club this year and compete at my level entry level. I dont mind sacrificing a rough road ride for a big benefit on the track. If needed il pay £1000 for a good set im just not sure what to expect or how much i should spend on a good setup i have no experience with this.

Brett, If your thinking of doing some competing wait until you have some more funds and get some good coil overs..
The only thing decent about these Taiwan based suspension is price.. Sti shocks or pedders suspension will out handle these cheap taiwan suspensions if correctly set-up..
There is a market for the taiwan suspension due to the cost and the fact people can slam there car for cheap..
If budget is important keep your eyes peeled for used KW's,AST's,EXtec etc they do come up.. you won't regret spending the extra especially if your think of doing some time attack..

A decent good quality road/track focused set up will be around £2k new, I'm removing a set of AST's for a set of EXE-TC's even second hand they cost more than a set of new BC's...handling is one of the most important things to get right IMO but obviously budget dictates what you can and can't do, mines has had a few quid chucked at it in the last year.

Yea i like the look of the k sport if theyre a better option than sti brembos. My main goal is to not touch any sti parts if i can help it. Mainly because evryone told me to sell up and get an sti so i want to keep it a custom build.

I hate to agree with you Ditch but without a doubt they are the 2 most important things to do, I need some 6 pot AP`s in my life

I realise that what you get is all about what your budget is etc, mixed in with a little knowledge, but being abit green round the gills when it comes to mechanics, set ups and cars in general etc l do find it confusing at times when it comes to the differing opinions on whats right to fit to your car and whats wrong. I have a 2001 Subaru Impreza wrx which l've had for about 18 months. I've always liked Subaru's from being a young kid watching Colin McRae rallying, but at that age l couldn't afford the insurance never mind the car, lol, so when l bought it the job was to just tidy up what was already a decent car, wasn't interested in modding it or speed just to keep it original. Had a full respray, went wrong, place l got it done at went bust so had to pay out again to get it put right. Got k&n filter, sports exhaust, new clutch, getting brembo's fitted in a couple of weeks, had it all undersealed and belts changed and going for a remap next month, more to just smooth everything out. The only problem l have at the moment is the nearside rear shock is knocking. So l thought a full set of KYB Ultra SR's would do the job. However in the last 3 days having spoken to or emailed KYB in the UK, Europe and America it appears that the 2 front shocks are now a discontinued item. Which brings me to what to do next regarding shocks. Reading this thread it seems BC Coilovers are good for some, not for others. Is the different models there fit to ? crap product or bias opinion ?. The knocking on some or problem with fitting the BC's put me off a little despite someone recommending them. However last night l got an email from KYB in America who suggested that the AGX line of adjustable shocks they do are a good fit. Has anyone on hear either heard of them or are using them ? Sorry for the long thread.

I tried doing suspension on the cheap, finally ended up resting on almost £2k worth of KW after trying a couple of the entry level options.
Seriously it's not worth moving to low-end coilovers in my opinion and experience. Your road experience will be ruined, and the adjust-ability will be inconsistent and difficult to gauge on track.
You can typically get enough camber from camber bolts with OEM struts, and some uprated springs will give you a much better ride from any of the entry level coilover options.
One setup for sub-£1k that I may consider on a future car is the MeisterR stuff. Design-wise they're identical to the BCs etc, but they're using springs and damping rates for less perfect roads. I'd be interested to go for a ride in a MeisterR car at somepoint.
