Right been in today and 3 mechanic's have said cv so its back in Wednesday to have the job done

 

I'm not a mechanic, nor have I seen the car and I said it was an outer Cv 👍

Let's hope it fixes the issue. I have the same issue with my wrx.

 

well it wouldve been fixed but it was bought by c performance yesterday and he took it with the clunk

Hi,

I'm also trying to sort out a strange grinding, vibrating, rumbling sound coming from what I think is the front of the car.
Mine is a 2003 Blob STI. from cold the car is fine with no noises. Once I've done 10 - 20 miles of general town / bypass driving, I start getting an odd grinding, vibrating, rumbling noise at car park speeds when I'm on half lock, usually turning right.
I'm sure it's coming from the near side front, but it does sound as though the noise travels through to the offside.
I have renewed the discs and pads all round, which I thought might help due to the old items being knackered !
I noted minimum play in the near side wheel bearing, which has some how disappeared as of tonight ??? I have read that bearings can fail without showing signs of play. I'm toying with replacing the near side front wheel bearing as I'm not sure if the bearing is heating up and causing the noises described.
My thoughts where that I may have a centre diff issue, but I wouldn't class it as a clunk of any kind.
I'm going offshore tomorrow, for 2 weeks. Once I'm home I'll get someone to drive it in circles while I listen at the wheels.
It's definitely something that is turning, as I can hear the pitch change as though it's a turning motion.
The only other odd thing that may be related is a droning noise that travels thorough the cabin when closing the throttle while in gear and letting the engine slow the car. It does sound like it's coming from the front and traveling back into the cabin.
Again, I thought this may be the wheel bearing having the drive load taken off it while off the throttle and in gear.

Sorry if this is a little long winded. I'm just trying to give as much clear info as possible.
It's really starting to **** me off. I'm not going down the process of elimination route. I just want to get to the bottom of the actual problem.

have you had the cv joints checked .

i thought wheel bearings caused a whining noise

 

Hi there,

No, i haven't checked the CV joints. I can hear the noise change in pitch, so i was assuming the wheel bearing. I would agree with the whining / humming noise through the car, but i get the impression that they don't always fail like that.
It's something that is turning, i know that much. It also only seems to appear when the cars been driven for a while. I'm home from work on Wednesday, so i'll have another look by the weekend.
The car only has 48000 on it, so i was hoping for a quick solution, but i do have to take into consideration that it's still 11 years old. I'm not putting the car to a garage because they will follow a process of elimination. I am going to suss it out for my self first.
