Self employed, my own company.
Hours 8.30am to around 3pm mon to Friday, try not to work Saturdays.
But I also do my pricing on 1 evening a week, a couple of hours or so.

My aim is by the time I'm 50 all I'll do is the pricing and not hands on the tools as such.
Semi-retirement.

Employed.

Yep, another 37.5hr weeker here, fixed (5 dpw, 9am-5pm with half-hour unpaid lunch). 27 days holiday (inc. the days set aside for Xmas; so therefore 22 days personal).

Very rarely is it necessary to do (mostly unpaid) overtime -- just gotta make sure jobs go out on time.

I thought I had it 'bad to average'... But compared to some of you, not too bad, all said and done.

Im a lorry driver so my hours vary from day to day, tbh I spend quite a bit of the day having a sleep here and there, so I cant really complain.

I work Monday-Friday, and I work away/night out on a Monday and finish on the Tuesday about 2pm-3pm so have most of the day then to do what I want.

As long as I got enough money to pay the mortgage, put food on the table for my family, and have enough left over to go on holiday every year, Im happy doing what im doing!!!

I used to work 60 or 70 hours a week when Ai was younger. These days though I rarely do more than 40 except when on call.

Being a paye slave anyway overtime soon starts to get swallowed up by the taxman.

I would be interested to know how many have to work long hours just to put food on the table and how many to fund a good lifestyle?

I believe that's the difference nowadays, society dictates we must all have overseas holidays, luxury goods, eat out once a week etc etc whereas 25 years ago it was very different.

It's a shame wages haven't kept up with inflation in those 25 years tho

tis a good point there

i went through redundancy in 2009 and it really hit me hard as its the 1st time i have ever been out of work (i even had 2 jobs when i was at high school-milk round in the morning and helping out at a friends dads warehouse after school).

so going from loads of work to nothing has really messed my head up and i have now lost faith in the system,im always worried that it will happen again.

i work as many hours as i can as you never know whats around the corner,so i enjoy my impreza whilst i can as thats the only real luxury i have.

Mine are up and down due to being freelance. I'm on "hibernation" hours at the moment so I get by on between 18-30 hours a week but come March it'll fluctuate from that up to 14-16 days straight 12-14hrs per day in peak season then back to "hibernation" hours again between Jan/Mar. I always rake it in between Mar/Dec so I can have 2/3 day weeks in the winter and not be short for food/utilities.

I'm lucky tbh, most of the lads in pubs/hotels/restaurants are doing 16-18hr days 6 days a week on salary (pants at that for the hours). Been there, very reluctant to go back.

I start work at 6.40am, when my tacho goes in, and usually finish for 5pm sometimes a little later, Monday to Friday. In on a Saturday once every 6 weeks. I get paid from 8-4 and not for my time on the Saturday.

FFS what is it with this place and people reading what they want into posts.

At the end of the day Thatcher started the whole 'greed is good', you need to own a house etc. mentality and then presided over a massive house price boom not to mention increasing taxes and started the whole debt based economy malarkey.

Blair then presided over a second house price boom and a massive increase in welfare spending and stealth taxes not to mention the costs of two illegal wars along with expanding hugely an economy built on debt,

Cameron has failed to cut welfare spending, created a huge number of very low paid jobs and zero hours contracts and reignited a debt based economic strategy despite what happened just a few years ago.

The result - a huge number of people are paid less per hour than they were, taxes are higher, property prices and thus rent have spiralled way above inflation therefore people need to work more hours to afford the same things they had years ago!

See, that wasn't so hard was it?

I enjoy working and want the same lifestyle I had 10 years ago, but as I now can't charge what I could then I work extra hours to make up for it.

Yes I could work less and live on less, but who just wants to 'exist'? I am lucky enough to still be able to earn a good crust, I just have to work a bit harder for it!

The people I feel sorry for are those that HAVE to work stupid hours just to 'exist'. That's what is wrong with our society and government, but while we have a set of politicians where most of them don't know what a decent day's works is nothing will ever change!

I thought the same about nights out, but I got used to it now, and I quite like having time away from the missus, I park up every Monday in the same place in Banbury, Go to the same chippy every week, then get back to my truck and put on a DVD, its the only time in the week I get to have a bit of quite time to myself.

I can start anytime between 4am- 8am depending where Im going(dont do 4am), If I got a bit of distance then I try and get in for 6am, if im local then 8am and I usually finish anytime between 4pm-6pm on a average day with anything upto 30mins-1hour sleep/nap in the day.

We get paid by the hour + bonus for the day + bonus for cleaning our own lorries(once a week) + time and half for weekends,
Some of our drivers do a few nights out in the week and do some distance and they pull in some serious money, but they work hard for it.
The gaffers leave you alone as long as your works done, and Ive been there 8 years and most of the drivers are the same ones from when I started, so it shows that they get looked after(even if there are some that still moan).

When were busy it's seven day weeks and twelve hours shifts for us, with one day off every fortnight.

Just now with the price of oil it's a bare 38 hour week, half two finish tomorrow and the weekend off, ******* boooost!

Lucky you.

The people I feel sorry for are those that HAVE to work stupid hours just to 'exist'.
But the vast majority don't work stupid hours do they, unless you include this " I work longer hours than you " thread, and what do you define as existing? Some people will always be the unfortunates at the bottom of the pay scale who also have to work hard doing menial jobs, it may not be fair but that's life I'm afraid.

I am doing quite a lot of work right now that involves visiting various SMEs and part of my role involves looking at their timesheets and payroll. Based on what I have seen I would say that for many SMEs your supposition is quite wrong!

Fair enough, I can only judge by what I now about the industry I work in, where people are not working longer hours , are getting more pay etc.
