Don't worry about STI inferiority, it's only something that relates to Subaru forums, in the real world 99.9% of people don't know the difference or significance. Buy a used boot spoiler, vent, spats, fog covers and skirts to get the STI looks.

Put a 350bhp JDM WRX Blob next to a 350bhp UK WRX STI.

After 400 metres which will lead by 4 or more car lengths Jay?

The 1360kg car that returns 32mpg or the 1480kg car that returns 23mpg?

You tell me now Jay.

I'm not looking at tuning potential etc.

I am looking at things like reliability and resale value.

The 2.5 is always a concern and values are dropping real quick.

There is a JDM blob sti up on auto trader at the moment

To be fair based on the power to weight ratio he's spot on.

It's the same as comparing equally powered Classic Vs Newage, no one argues about that though do they.

120kg is an awful lot of weight to give away, it's equal to your average sized Bloke with his bird as a passenger or one Tubby thomas.

The STI suffers greater transmission losses too. WRX for me all day if you are prepared to keep torque levels low. That might mean running a slightly larger Turbo than what is customary to raise BHP lower LBFT.

The 5 speed box might be weaker but it's value is reflected in the quicker acceleration, relatively cheap replacement costs and increased MPG.

All you ever base your argument on is a few car lengths in a straight line race. If you want to talk about performance then throw in some twisties and see what happens, maybe play a game top trumps with the different model components and see what happens. The STI is a superior car...Its a fact.

Who the **** buys not only an Impreza but any performance car for its fuel economy..? No one who has ever bought a performance car thats who!

To be fair, fuel economy is always something I consider. As long as I can get 30 mpg on a long steady run at 65 - 70 then I am happy but I understand your point.

I looked at an r32 golf as well as a 330 bmw.

My requirements are.....

needs to be able to get 30 mpg on a run
needs to have "get up and go"
Reasonably comfortable
needs back doors and a decent boot for kids stuff

Hence looking to stay in Subaru territory.

anything else anyone would recommend

Imprezas are designed for ludicrously quick 0-100 times in loose road surfaces, they aren't designed for top end speed or cornering on tarmac. So yes MPG is pretty significant when driving a car that can only really compete in short bursts against some powerful FWD/RWD cars. I've had my **** handed to me by M3's etc but never from a standing start. From the lights a WRX spanks an STI, even when the STI has up to 20% extra power.

It really is a no-brainer.

The WRX is often quoted at 1395kg but that is mainly lazily based on the 1395kg SL version with sunroof and heavier leather interior.

Anyone else not give two ****s about the sti/wrx which is faster grudge match anymore?? An sti is more superior in spec but a wrx is still a quick car out of the box so what who cares they are both subaru's both turbo'd and both have their place in the market.
As for a hatch i wouldnt have one given ugly looking car **** engine and to be honest dont stand out to me like a subaru is supposed to. Each to their own and all that but given the choice saloon blob sti any day of the week although not at nine to ten grand!

STI v WRX is like Mike Tyson v Usain Bolt. Once Bolt gets on the bicycle he'll be out of sight.

Please let's not turn this into a wrx vs sti argument

I have narrowed it down to...

sti blob
bmw 535i diesel
Mercedes cls 330 diesel
audi a8 4.2 diesel.....

my wife likes all of them... apart from the sti lol

I probably just need a diesel saloon now. But I am just not convinced on autoboxes.

Gonna just have to drive them all
