Hey Watty you I T Nerd
Clever these Japanese aint they! This Skylark thingy has eyes to see the apex, dialls in just enough lock for you to take the quickest line and to top it all off knows exactly when to Brake.....amazing.
Don't really need to be there really :roll eyes
Yawn.... heard it all before....but I'll say it again for the benefit of the mentally challenged....No DSC No ESP No Traction Control......The Skyline drives itself hmmmmmm urban myth my boy, urban myth.
You see it works like this. RWD untill the enevitable push out oversteer then the torque is transfered to the front wheels upto a max of 50/50 split. What happens when AWD or FWD car is at full tilt through a bend? (and you don't let off ) The car wants to pull straight!! See no rocket science just a question of combining the benefits of RWD (steering purity)and AWD (traction)in one car. Oh! there is a Rear wheel dif and the rear wheels steer a few degrees to tip the car in if you are aggressive enough with the wheel, but asside from that no driver aids at all.
I'll just step down from me box get me coat.

Regards
Steve

ian,
the 22B is raw, no fancy gadjets or electronics to smooth out the driver just a pure drivers car.
Possibly the RS Sprint version of the VII would prove to as enjoyable!

Steve,
I was pulling your leg mate, I do know that the Skylark doesn't drive itself, it just has some smarts when it comes to power distribution, which isn't a bad thing, regardless of what the journos would like you to think.

John,
I think Iain might be scared of something melting (p.s. got your package yesterday morning, thanks mate, I had forgotten about it).

Cheers

Ian

Sorry Watty!
I meant my reply to be both informative and humourous. Not having a pop honestly I know you're not like some of the keep net fodder on here
Speaking about things that drive themselves judging by my inability to put smilie legends on screen perhaps a PC that did it all for me might not be such a bad idea

Steve,
Yeah, I know what you mean mate

As for a PC that drives itself ? Don't those Apple Mac thingys do that ? (Start a holy war why don't I )

As for you Steve, I suggest you just unplud your keyboard and mouse. I find my PC to be much safer this way

Cheers

Right then.....

Drove the EVO7 this weekend (from Cheltenham down to Castle Combe, dual-carrigeway then some twisty stuff) and then back again (Castle Combe to Cheltenham, twisty stuff all the way back, including the splendid Cirencester-Cheltenham old road).

So, big thanks to Iain at Litchfield Imports for that. Cheers bud

Well, what can I say except Wow. No, that doesn't even come close. Let me just say that I'm no driving expert, in fact I would go so far as to say that I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to driving cars hard.

However, the EVO7 seems to cruise on B-roads at the same speeds that you would be hanging on for dear life, in other cars (I include 22B, STi's etc. in this and to a slightly lesser degree the EVO6).

On the way down I spent most of it in a convoy so didn't really get to push hard.

However, on the way back, on the real 'test' roads, I didn't need to convoy and was able to push the car quite hard.

First impression was that the car feels very much firmly attached to the road, even when parked. Funny feeling that, I hope someone reading this understands what I mean.

Driving position is just perfect for me (I'm 6ft 1) and I like to sit close to the wheel. Steering wheel, pedals and gear stick all fall in the right place. The gear shift is short throw and nice and notchy and you don't have to lean forwards slightly for 1st which annoys me in some cars. Didn't miss a gear all day even when shifting very quickly. Steering is nicely weighted and I'm not sure of the ratio but is fairly quick, 1/4 turn left or right is the most I used on the twisty stuff, but obviously more for parking and the occasional roundabout.

The seats are works of art, very comfortable with loads of side support. It doesn't clamp you too hard so you don't tend to notice it until you corner, then you just don't move, at all. Very similar to the EVO6 seats (which I always said were the best for me) but I think the EVO7 ones have more shoulder support.

Overall build quality is very good, good solid feeling when you close the doors/boot etc. No squeeks or rattles (but it has only done 2k miles, so we shall see).

As for driving it ? Well, put it this way, I was really upset when I got to the outskirts of Cheltenham. I really didn't want to give it back

Low speed/high speed, doesn't matter, the ride is comfortable but firm. Doesn't have that low speed bang/crash feel that the EVO6 had.

Handling is the best part of this car. Nothing seems to upset it. Camber changes, potholes mid corner, drain covers, broken tarmac, none of it caused the car to wander off the line I told it to follow. Steering feedback is very good, even with my lack of skill, I quickly picked up exactly what the front end was doing. This is something I have always wanted from a car, and I got it with the EVO7, with bells on.

The engine is also very good. Throttle response is instant, no honestly, instant. Doesn't matter what gear/revs, the car just picks up and goes. Out of junctions, throught the gears using all the revs, it just pulls and pulls and before you know it it is way way over the speed limit.

The number of times I would be in 3rd/4th gear twisties, driving it hard and I would see 90mph on the speedo and see I was/had been steering one handed for most of it. Awesome. Not once did I scare myself as the car was much more compotent than I am. Honestly, it was completely well behaved at all times even though I was pushing on some.

Brakes are nice and solid. Not over-servoed at all, i.e. you push on them hard to get hard braking, but it is very linear and smooth.

At a couple of the more open roundabouts I took on the 'see if you can get the back end to breakway challenge' that Iain and others had said wasn't really possible.

Just once I got the back end to step out a touch, maybe an inch or so then the car sat down and just pulled the car around the roundabout. Mind-blowing for me.

Iain took the car out on track at Castle Combe in the late afternoon with Rich (Powerstation) as passenger. Iain caught then kept up with an Evo Extreme in his session and the Extreme owner was trying. OK, this isn't a scientific comparison, but shows the potential on the car. Iain reported that as the back end broke away and even started to drift you could still dial in a bit more steering lock and the car would still turn in. The brakes did get a bit of fade towards the end of 6 laps but we think it was just the pads, easily fixed.

Overall, I would say this car raises the game by about another 30% over the EVO6. And I thought the EVO6 was better than most Scoobies (including STi's and 22B). I've yet to drive the new WRX, so I'll reserve judgement on that (even though I still think it is fuggly).

All in all, I would say the EVO7 is the perfect point to point car. Not the fastest when it comes to dual-carrigeways/motorways, but combined driving that includes twisty A and B-roads, it is the daddy, by a big leap.

Now if only Toyota would come out with something like this Honestly, if I had the money, my Toyota loyalty would suddenly evaporate

I would sell my grandmother for this car, in fact anybody want to offer on my 76 year old grannie ?

Again, thanks to Iain for this experience, and should you be seriously interested, give Iain a call as this car is now his demonstrator. Think he has a new banner kicking about on Scoobynet, with contact details.

Cheers

Ian

Yeah Ian, great review...

Ever considered writing for some car magazine ? That would be the ideal job for me, if I didn't always write the same things ?

Evo7 is an awesome car but i think Evo6 is a better driving tool.
You said that evo6 is better than most scoobies,it is wrong.
In real world scoobies are unbeatable .
ý know evo7 is a bit better than NEW STI but outgoing STIs are much better than the new one i think.
STI4 TYPE-R did 1.05.3(or 1.05.3) and STI4 RA did 1.05.2.evo6GSR did 1.05.8 and RS did 1.05.7.EVO7 did 1.05.1.22B will even do better than STIs and also P1 maybe. They are old stis maybe 5-6 versions will do better times especially the TYPE-RA.IMPREZA also RULES ON TRACK.EVO7 is also awesome on track and real world but i still choose SCOOBIES,especially STIs but not the new, ugly and heavy one.
Thanks

Richard,

There is a very good chance that I won't get to drive the car before a test drive, I'm that convinced its gonna be a better car.

Ian,

Unfortunatley, I havent yet had the opportunity to drive one. I am pretty convinced that it is superior to my mak, although after a certain point, it all becomes rather subjective.
I certainly will give it a go. With UK models not appearing until September, I have plenty time to play.

Cem

p.s. I am convinced P1 WR has returned!

Hi Cem

As my next car is going to be an Evo (I drove a VI Mak a while back ), I'm also very interested in your views of the VII once you've tried it.

Mind you - doesn't sound like Mitsu. Switzerland are gonna' import the VII

Thanks
Richard

2fast4u,

I know you are not likely to bother answering this, you ignored my last list of questions, but I will feel better for asking anyway...

Have you actually driven an EVO 7? How about a 22b, or indeed an STI?

Moray

PS : I was suprised to see the figures you posted... I wasn't aware the Playstation 2 version of gran tourismo was out yet... evo 7 isn't in GT2.

Cem,
No probs. When you going to drive one ? I'd be interested in how much of a difference the EVO7 is over the Mak, if any.

Rui,
Write for a car mag ? Have to spend my life driving around in free cars, with free fuel and claim expenses etc. ? No, can't see that happening, I wouldn't have time to spend on Scoobynet

2fast4u,
Thanks for that valid and constructive input

MrData,
No, I haven't specifically driven a P1, but having driven an STi3, 4, and 5 I think I have a fair handle on their abilities. I have sat in a P1 though, but I guess that doesn't really help . However, I do think a few cosmetic changes do not make a boggo-standard STi into a supercar (no matter how much Prodrive would like you to think so).

I'll say it again, the EVO7 is in another league and I've still not had any offers on my gran

Cheers

Ian

I have a my99 uk turbo and i have driven evo6 TME and also EVO RS.In my decision my car is better than the two i real world.I have eibach springs, prodrive geometry,STI strut brace and 225/45 16 s02 pole positions.
A friend of mine also drove evo6 TME and P1 and said that P1 handles much better.
You also saw the times for STIs and EVOs in tsukuba circuit with same driver.Thats all.
I am not saying that evos are not good and every impreza is better than evos but i will prefer all turbo models of impreza to an evo.

Scoob99,
I guess you just trying to wind Pete up (fair enough), but as I said, I have driven the 22B and it does not come close to the Evo7.

I like to think of myself as unbiased I drive neither a Scooby or Evo.

Steve,
