It's about the whole package, big numbers are for straight lines and flat surfaces, especially on the type of road Shaun describes above, also agree you'll need to be one hell of a driver to pedal a RWD car as well as some of these modern hot hatches, you'll probably be having more fun in the RWD but you'll be going slower or risking life and limb of not just yourself but others out there too to keep up.

Although I didn't like the R, it would probably be the one I would buy simply because of the size of the market I could develop tuning hardware and software for. If I could sort funding, how would open source Golf R tuning sound? I am leaving my job and looking to stir something new up

This understeer malarkey is over stated imo. Yes it exists, but nothing that gets in the way by any stretch of the imagination.
Not all A45's come with the Dunflops Matt (which are OEM on the 18's, and were the wheels/tyres fitted to the review cars).... I have the Continental Contact Sports (as I'm on 19's) which are very soft and provide loads of grip. The only problem is they wear too quickly and don't have very stiff sidewalls. Grip though, is certainly not an issue with these tyres. I will however move to the PSS's when these expire.
Engine wise, yes yours will pull early..... but not by much. The setup in the AMG is none like you've probably experienced before with a 2ltr. It's phenomenally responsive, and pulls hard from 2k all the way to the rev limit. I understand your engine pulls earlier, but runs out of puff at the top end. Powerband is probably as wide on both, just at slightly different rpm points. You drive the 2ltr like it should be driven, and it's not a problem imo. The A45 setup is leagues ahead of the JDM 2ltr twinscroll, and performs like a much bigger capacity engine imo. To get an easy 400/400 out of a 2ltr, yet retain awesome driveability is a pretty amazing feat, based on what has come before it.
In response to your point about EVO.... well Chris Harris said that if you can afford it... buy the A45. If you can't, buy the M135i.
Reviews mean **** to me..... it's what I feel and want that counts. This stuff is very subjective and both cars are clearly awesome in their own way.
I love 2ltr turbo cars.... always have and I suspect always will.

Market is massive John (R's and S3's jointly sold over 6k cars in the UK during 2014!!!!), and dare I say it, is the modern era Subaru replacement.
Do it!!!

Both the A45 and M135 have fallen off the media's "new shiny toy" list anyway but Evo did rather slate the Merc whereas Chris had previously waxed lyrical about the BM; the RS3 vs M135i test was a prime example.
I just don't like four cylinders much; yes we have one in the Subaru (no turbo) but at least it has a bit of Subaru character, great throttle response and is a boxer setup.
Apart from in the über light Caterham style cars, I just don't like four pots even in they develop 500bhp. Same with Haldex; it just instantly removes a layer of fun in pursuit of outright grip.

Audis' RS3 typifies their image. Nothing they do is really any "fun" to me..... their range is just too stuffy imo. Audi's are great cars no doubt, but being "great" doesn't fill my helmet up with blood.
I'd buy one as a daily driver, but never as something to pull out of the garage to have some fun in.
It's horses for courses, and personally I think our intended use and reason for buying is what influences many of our decisions with car buying. There is certainly nothing wrong with that, and in essence the absolute reality.
I personally have no brand loyalty when it comes to cars, as there are so many great cars out there to buy.
I wanted a chav mobile and wanted the best I could get. I know my roots.

They are slow compared to an S8, have old interior and electronics and feel cheap in comparison. S8 much better value for what you get.

Car number 4 was a stage 2 tuned S4 3.0TFSI with claimed 480BHP, which is the same engine as the fastest S5. Car number 1 is stage 1 S8.

I went to Crail one day and only managed 12seconds with 650bhp impreza on goodyear f1's, a lot of spinning and changing into 2nd gear at just shy of 8000rpm and only a few foot from where I launched the car. The Wallace Evo sitting at 800bhp was only managing mid 11's and it was funny I ended up 4th fastest car of the day.

Glad you like it Alan. Steve, it's not bad for an understated self drive limo that looks like an A4, you can see why I like them. The Crail runs were also damp, lots of slip in the first few gears.

Just seen that M2 post, 365bhp seems a bit tame for BMW... Bet it'll be fun though. However does look like an M1 as its kinda same chassis or look....
