Hi Baz,

Would rather not say at the moment as a lot of people are viewing this post.

Although things not looking good with this builder as per what's came to light during the post. I will reserve judgement for now until I get my engine back, install it, run it & have the conversation about gasket choice/CR ratio.

Sorry about that Baz. If you have had an engine built recently & are having problems let me know your builders name & I will tell you if it's the same guy. I am guessing not as that would be a million to one but hay you never know. Tried to PM you but was returned stating you need to clear space as you have used up all your allocation.

Cheers Paul.

Hi All,

Quick update.

Received engine back yesterday afternoon by pallet delivery.
Installed engine last night & took it for 20 mile test drive (never above 2,750 rpm). So far anyway all is well, sounds good, no leaks etc. Obviously I can’t run engine on boost/optimum torque as will have to run it in first.

Plan moving forward.

0-250 miles: Millers 10w40 competition running in mineral oil (counter act glazing internal combustion bores) & genuine Subaru JDM black filter (higher flow).

250-1000 miles: Fresh Millers 10w40 CRO & genuine Subaru JDM black filter.

1000 miles: Fresh Millers 10w40 competition fully synthetic (triple ester) & genuine Subaru JDM black filter.

Then give it some beans, it will be at this stage i will be able to tell if there is any significant changes to the engines various parameters.

I will update the forum again after I have run it in. Fingers crossed. This might take a bit of time as won’t be home much.

Thanks again for all the help & advice.

Cheers Paul.

Hi Paul
Everyone has a different opinion on running in engines...
My way is

Mineral oil for 200 - 300 miles
Never take it over 4,000 rpm
And really put it under load. Find a hill or two and really bed in those bores.

Hi All,

Apologies as completely forgot to update forum with the outcome of my engine after the running in process.

Eventually after getting to the bottom of some problems with TPS (moved position in transit on pallet delivery, watch out for that one,was a lot of extra work & cost to troubleshoot!!!) & some other parts the car is now running, pulling & boosting as it should. I see no real noticeable drop in power. The car is as fast as it has ever been in the 15years I’ve owned it .

However I do notice a slight increase in fuel consumption. This will be due to my builder installing replacement cylinder headgaskets that were roughly 0.5 mm thicker than he should have installed . That’s best estimate without having the equipment, engine & no how to carry out the calculations after complete engine rebuild including rebore to 20/1000.

Original gasket = 0.6 mm, combined amount removed fromdeck & head 0.2 mm, even after calculations it’s going to be around (again best estimate) 0.8 mm gaskets required. The builder installed 1.3 MLS gaskets. Cams& valves positioned 0.5 mm higher hence the reason for the increase in fuel consumption due to timing being ever so slightly out I assume.

I also have a new problem since the engine came back from builder a second time being a very small engine oil leak. We are talking minimal amount, am 99.9 % sure it’s coming from the crankshaft oil seal but would need to confirm same. Manic with work at present but when time permits will nail down & repair leak.

As you will be able to gather from this thread, all in all my experience with this builder has not been good. He has had my engine twice now & I still have a problem. This obviously means I had to remove & install the engine one more time than I should have had to plus I still have a problem .

It has been a lot of hassle, extra money & carry on but on the upside the old girl lives on but for how long I guess is the real question ? Only time will tell but for now all is well. Fingers crossed in all that. It’s a good job I love my Subaru’s .

BIG THANKS to all the posters who helped me through this carry on. Your help & information was very gladly received & very much appreciated .

Cheers Paul.
