Being used to the image quality that even an older DSLR can render with good glass I have to say compacts have always disapointed me - more so by the quality of good phone cameras these days (albeit as has been said in the right conditions)
Super impressed with the image from the Canon G7X mind you. Not quite as impressed as I am with the lake shot Stu (stunning), but at 1/10th the cost I shouldn't be.

When I finally opted for the G7X i headed straight to the lakes to get some test shots.
No filters used (I use Lee filters for landscapes on my 5D3 at all times) and the 5D3 on tripod vs the G7X handheld, framing as close to each other as I could get.
Canon G7X (Handheld)
Camera make:Canon
Camera model:Canon PowerShot G7 X
Focal length:10.7 mm
Max lens aperture:f/2
Exposure:1/60 at f/6.3
Exposure mode:Auto
ISO speed:ISO 400
Metering mode:Pattern
Digital zoom:1x
5D3 & Canon Ef 16-35 F4 IS L (Tripod)
Camera make:Canon
Camera model:Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Focal length:30 mm
Max lens aperture:f/4
Exposure:1/6 at f/8
Exposure mode:Auto
Exposure prog.:Aperture priority
ISO speed:ISO 100
Metering mode:Pattern
As you can imagine, I was a VERY happy boy. For a tiny 1" sensor, this thing really is pretty incredible.
Had the sky been brighter then the 5D3 and its filters would have won the day, but as it was cloudy the dynamic range wasnt an issue and the little G7X gave an awesome account of itself! Especially when you consider it cost about half the price of the tripod the 5D3 is sat on!
On the way home, I saw a nice scene I could grab from the car, something again, ive always wanted to do but unpacking my SLR always makes me think "Sod it".
I grabbed this out of the car window at the end of Wrynose Pass.
Then at home - cropped it 1:1.
That weekend I took it in a cave with the family to test it in very low light.
The exif tells the story - High ISO, comedy low shutter speed and the image stabiliser works a bloody treat too!
Camera make:Canon
Camera model:Canon PowerShot G7 X
Focal length:8.8 mm
Max lens aperture:f/1.8
Exposure:1/20 at f/1.8
Flash:Not fired, compulsory mode
Exposure bias:0 EV
Exposure mode:Auto
ISO speed:ISO 2500
Metering mode:Pattern
Digital zoom:1x
Again - All hugely better results than expected.
I think compacts have finally come of age.

Me too mate, but my hiking led me to doing some serious testing and reviewing as something had to give as I grew really fond of creating trip reports for my hikes on a forum I use and I just couldnt keep unpacking my SLR gear and making my pals wait around while I messed about with it all. You know how it is, filters, lenses, tripods, its endless. So the hunt began for something smaller. Initially, to carry AS WELL as the 5D3 and its mates. LOL

Sorry, missed your reply. Thanks, glad you like it.
Prior to that I was up at a place called "Surprise View" I got some great images up there and then jumped in the car and drove down with my fingers crossed the light would last long enough for the plan of putting tea lights on the jetty. It turned out to be one of my favourite images to date.
The jetty is out of view towards the right of this image.
Anytime mate. Photography overtook my love of cars a year or so ago, and led me to hiking.
Its saved me a fortune! LOL

Definately not the Lake District, I know the lakes pretty well and thats definately not there. Looks more like the peak district or shropshire.
