Q plates are reserved for cars that have been massively altered or normally given to kitcars. They cannot be given to mass produced cars (unless as above altered) and hence you are also stuck with the registration you are given.
For the amount of money spent I wanted to make sure I didn't. No one has ever seen an ultima with a Q plate for instance.

A mate of my Dads, Nick Butler built cars and ended up putting one into very limited production; it was called a Cirrus Gold. Little car, 4wd, V8; lovely thing but it just cost too much.
He built hot rod Morris Minors (supercharged V8s!), did Dads Ford P100 Cortina pickup (400bhp V8), etc.
That's partly where I got my love of cars from plus dad had some serious kit.
I must build a Caterham or similar one day. I have the full Halfords Professional socket set; surely I'm more than qualified?!

Before this all I had done was change spark plugs and brake pads...so thought may as well give it a go. now I've near enough done everything! Other than bodywork prep and spray.
And yes you can build a locost 'caterham' style car for under £4k if you really wanted too. I recommend it just for the experience.

Crap is a bit strong but if you don't like it that's fair enough as I only built it for me to like. However I do agree with you on the rear end, bugged me since day one and its the lights that date it. All to meet positions of lighting. The test makes sharp edges below certain radius's failure points as well, A p1 would never pass the test for instance, but manufacturer test to home build is obviously different. I suspect ill design some newer shaped LED lights for the rear to help bring the rear further up to date, at the moment large wide diffusers are the 'in' thing.
Its definitely not an MR2 in a skirt, it doesn't even use an MR2 chassis. Just because it has the mr2 engine in it doesn't make it an mr2. I had to make a custom steering column,dash, body loom, only engine loom was used, windscreen, headlights. Infact is easier to say the 4 suspension arms and rack (although even thats modified) and engine were main bits. The photo below shows that level of customisation.
Its important when building a kit car to use enough parts from the same car to score enough points to get a normal registration, if you don't or use parts from various cars you get a Q plate. The chassis / engine compartment can take a v6 or v8, its just our DVLA that limits you doing so early in the build, later on you can do what you want to it.
I'm not in the position to have a £25k toy, I use to have a toyota supra TT, I sold that 4-5yrs ago and I work from home. As i'm sure you know once you take buying a Jap sports car, insurance, tax, mot, tyres, mods etc... take that over 4-5yrs and the amount you can save by not having one it adds up quick.
I just actually made the choice to ditch having the sporty car to follow my dream and build my own car. Sacrifices have to be made for each of us to reach our own goals, this just happened to be mine.

It does look pretty good but it will always be like marmite round these parts.
I always fancied a kit car but I honestly don't think I would use it. When I had my daily drive Elise and it came to the weekend I always opted to use the ball and chain's Fabia VRS

I think I'd try and get a fairly decent one - it'll be a while yet but it HAS to be done. Westfields appeal a lot too.
Good on you for yours - that's a massive commitment and great result.

I think it looks superb and massive respect from me as I couldn't build a car in 10 years if my life depended on it.
I looked at Locost about 15 years ago dreaming and bought one of the books on them but as building a lego set is about my limit I gave up on the idea of ever building a kit car.
How long did it take you from start to finish?

Well done, it looks very nice and individual.
One of my brother in laws has built a car using aluminium, looks like some really old school F1 car from the 1930's, took him the best part of 10yrs to complete it, worst thing about it is that he used his slightly rusty Escort MK2 1600 RS, he would have been better off fixing that as it'd be worth a small fortune now.

From when the chassis arrived to passing the test was 10months. So I did the actual build quite quick. however I did work out it was about 600-650hrs it took on top of work so I was very commited to it but not once did it become a chore rather then a pleasure as it all went very smoothly really.
Anyone who is thinking about building caterhams or similar you really should do it, its not as hard as you think and when the engine fires up for the first time and moves under its own power you realise what you have managed to do.

I've tried to design it to feel like a normal car rather then stripped out but again may change the more I drive the car. I don't have that wheel on anymore.
Had a good drive tonight, still wary with it being early days in the running of the car!

I actually like that mate well done.
What I would have to do though is look at some mega fast engine, because I wouldn't want to drive something that looks that good and be smoked by a Clio 182....
But well done mate, one of the best kits I've seen, like that yellow one too....
