well, yes - if you plan to retire to a gated community or escape to the hills like a US survivalist
aka do a "ray mears"
but if you have a more global outlook and hate to see parts of the world "off limits"
it is a shame
my eldest is planning a gap yuh -
with all the dangers of disease, travel on dodgy boats / planes and trains we know have to worry about some lunatic opening up with an AK47
I travelled throughout Asia (after a stop-off in Damascus) in my late teens / 20's
even spending a few weeks in Kashmir
would not be possible today :-(

There used to be a time when these things were shocking but these days it's just another piece on the news.

If your oldest wants to go off the beaten track give me a PM, I have good contacts in all the third world off the beaten track type places that will take good care of you and yours and sort all the travel and accommodation if required.

Yes, I can see why you post graphs like that, you see the world through the prism of religion, I totally understand that (I have pointed this fact out, on this forum, for at least the last couple of years)
When your only tool is a hammer every problem is, inevitably, going to be a nail
And I can see how ultimately it is comforting, reassuring and self explanatory for both you and jihadists to view the world in this way
But unfortunately it is simply a wrong analysis of the problems facing the human race
When your only tool is a hammer every problem is, inevitably, going to be a nail

Edited to add JT that I do not wish in any way to compare you personally to a jihadist butcher
I think you are a good man JT, and I hope you take my point in the spirit I made it
I am sure you will agree these are tough times for humanity

You'll stick stubbornly to your secular 'poverty and power' mantra, because that's what you believe and you're too arrogant to go where the truth leads. In 20 years time, if you and I are still battling it out (and I sincerely hope we are) you'll perhaps concede that Salafi-Jihadi Islam was at the root.

I like you, too, you arrogant bugger, and yes these are extraordinarily tough times. I've just spent time quietly praying for our leaders to show wisdom and for God to reveal His plan. I think that without the hope that Jesus brings to my life I would be in despair.

Kashmir is probably one of the safer off the beaten tracks places you can go these days, I was there 2yrs ago and there are that many police and soldiers on the streets the extremists don't stand a chance.

You have squarely hit the nail on the head there, Hodgy, if you would pardon the pun. And arrogance is a strong word to use against someone just because they do not share your "belief"; other opposing religions have made a massive contribution to the hatred that fuels fundamental jihadism. SN should be kept secular.

try reading a few words by one of the very few people who've actually spent time with them:

after all you don't own the what people think of you - that is their right/prerogative
which is interesting, and related to the whole ISIS/Jihadist issue
I remember listening to a Bush speech, years ago , before the current mess
and it he started to talk about freedom, the "wests"values etc - so so far so ho hum
and then he made a startling claim - ludicrous and arrogant in equal measure
be basically said, in his convoluted way, that the Jihadist had no right to hate America (and by extension the west)
they had no right to hold that view
not that the hate filled view was wrong - he simply denied them the right to even think it
I always thought that was strange and showed a fundamental lack of understanding the whole seismic-ness of the issue

With respect, Hodgy, you refuse to accept that this is an Islamic issue. You're on record, going back years, as claiming poverty, education and a lack of empowerment (among other things) as being the causes of Islamism and not the symptoms? Is this any different than Bush (for whom I have very little respect) refusing to accept that "jihadis" had and have the right to hate America. Both positions fly in the face of the evidence. Two sides of the same coin. ;-)

Oh, we don't. Not a scooby. But that wasn't the point I was making. Hodgy says that 'religion' is just a sideshow; I say, as far as Islamic State and other Salafist Jihadis are concerned, it's absolutely the main gig.

Agreed. To try and pin it down to one or two social problems is massively oversimplifying the situation.
