A petty point really as, being paid by an 'employer', even contractors are subject to company regulations governing the behaviour of 'employees'.

In such circumstances retribution from the 'Fith Floor' has always been very swift.

yes, all points noted

although Clarkson was sanctioned when he was deemed to be racist/offensive etc, not when he simply expressed a personal opinion about a new BMW or wind power or etc etc etc

my point is that I suspect Andrew Neil was operating under different rules than say Nick Robinson, the political editor of the BBC - or any BBC news journalist

and as has been said, he did not really say anything "outrageous" he did not imo misused/exploit his position - unless you are a Jihadist

not "you" btw

also This Week is not produced by BBC, but by an independent production company - Juniper TV

maybe the rules are different too when not a BBC production

I get the whole argument, from both sides, surrounding the content of what Neil said. I also agree with what you have said on the Lord's Prayer thread, 'Ultimately if you are stupid enough to be offended you deserve to be offended'. I think the significance of the outrageous content would depend on your personal standpoint though.
Clarkson was let off being officially disciplined because the racial content wasn't actually broadcast on TV. Surely racism (as expressed by Clarkson) is a personal point of view, although it could also be a general cultural dogma.

Not being privy to BBC contractual negotiations, the possibility that Neil enjoys a certain leeway to express things that his peer journalists do not isn't something I can evaluate, but I suspect that to allow him extra editorial slack in this way would be a dangerous thing in setting precendents that other journos might want to exercise in the future.

Wouldn't they be subject to general rules governing contractors? I don't know, just guessing. They would certainly be subjected to standard editorial control though.

I think that is key tbh

and agree - we are guessing really, we don't know what the contracts say for either contactors or 3rd party program makers

anyway it was well said and had obviously hit something in the population as it needed to be said

(and I am not one of Andrew Neil's biggest fans)
