The WHOLE royal family don't do as much WORK in a year as I did in a month, trust me.

Unless being driven about waving to folk counts?

Anyway, why has this become personal? They are wastes of space, money and oxygen. End of.

And as for my job, it was brought up simply because I had a proper job. Unlike ANY royal. And I don't believe Harry fired on the enemy, he's not allowed unless they fire first, rules of engagement, and he wouldn't have been allowed within a million miles of any actual combat. IF he fired a waepon it was probably fired by his minder/servant while he watched, LOL

What makes you think I was a teacher, ditchy? Educational labourer, more like.

Hmmm, 63 years in the same job, a job she never actually expected to get nor apply for and was hers purely by accident, with not a moment's (public) petulance and the chance to chuck it all in for the quiet life.
Surely even the most hard core republican can acknowledge that human achievement without getting a dose of birth right jealousy and being mealy mouthed about it.
But what do I know?
But this is scoobynet and perhaps there really are such grossly ignorant people about that can deny such an example of professionalism and dedication to duty and call it merely a sup from the gravy train.

If I had that sort of job, nay if ANYONE had that sort of job, with it's multitudinous perks and astronomical level of remuneration, I reckon anyone could be happy.

Sadly, most of us have to make our own beds, and put our own toothpaste on our toothbrushes, buy and maintain our own homes...amongst many many other things, like paying for large parts of our healthcare.........

But hey, what do I know?

As for incredible: yes.....using the original meaning of the word: who could believe that anyone simply born into a certain family could end up so rich and so privileged for doing almost nowt?

And if it hadn't been for a bit of nastiness by the British upper classes, she'd now be a minor royal, her uncle having had to abdicate for doing what Charles is now lauded for. You couldn't make it up.......

I have nothing against the Royals, but if it was up to me, I'd make a museum out of the castle, de-centralise their wealth, have the Royal to stop this linear/generational benefit scrounging, let them call themselves the Royals by bloodline but they can live in a normal house like everyone else does; in the UK. They can still act like diplomats even as normal living peeps, and we can pay them a reasonable income for that. This country can have an elected 5-yearly president for the Queen's job. But as it's not up to me, I have no power to change anything.

By the way, I don't belong to the Greens or anything. It's just my independent thought.

How would you differentiate between the money that was state given and the money that was genuinely earned by the royal Family?

I'll say it again I'm no royalist nor am I a republican but I can see the math and the kudos we as a nation receive from the rest of the world.

Personally I don't think any man is better than me, nor I them, we are all humans and to be completely honest I really don't envy anyone born into the royal family or a "high society" type position, it would be my worst nightmare.

The point you make compels me to re-phrase.

Read it now as my idea of de-centralising the wealth that they already possess. Most of it, I mean.

The way I would differentiate is by evaluating their physical and of course, intellectual contribution to Britain. For example, Elizabeth and Charles can have a wage each for what they do. Queen should put her feet up and live on her pension now, anyway. She didn't even look back at Malta yesterday when she was boarding the plane to do one. She has had enough. Harry and Will should get their army money or get a wage each for their diplomat jobs e.g. dancing with African kids and getting their head marked with paint in India. I'm afraid merely the linear titles don't suffice to claim a palace and live in luxury. Well, they do, but I wish they didn't.

So yeah, rest I'd take back, to give it back to the state.

I think its great, the last step in insuring politicians keep to the rule. Blair did want to do away with regular elections after all.

And there we have it. It's like those idiots who say "you'll never convince me we went to the moon", because it's what they want to believe, no matter what the truth is.

Disregard any conflicting data

So let's get this straight, we have quoted some actual figures about the civil list, who gets paid, what the Royal estates earn, income generated form Royal events etc. and all you have done is call them spongers and privileged, with generalisations, and we have the lost the argument?

Geez, you should go on the Jeremy Vine show with that sort of attitude, you'd fit right in.

Ah...you've now repeated it once...keep going, keep going.

Spongers, they are. Work shirkers, they are. Playing at being in the forces, they are. Privileged for no reason other than birth, they are.

And you'd know because...? Muahahahahahahaha

sure it was a good thread, but instead of being about the Royals vetoing laws, it became about the nett worth of the royals to the country...and my worth. ie: people like you made it personal, since you had NO OTHER WAY OF WINNING THE ARGUMENT.

Your kind really is pathetic, you can't win, so you resort to personal and name calling.

Say after me: the royal family is a blight on the UK that should be removed yesterday.

Alcazar is right...as always.

Herein lies the problem Jeff.

There is no argument to be "won". The thread had become a discussion as to the Royal's net (only one "t") worth to the UK. As it is impossible to know with any degree of accuracy whether the Royal Family is a net contributor to UK Plc or a net beneficiary from UK Plc, there can only be opinions.

The question then becomes the basis for those opinions. All of the information presented on this thread would support the possibility that they are a net contributor and that whilst they don't have a job that fits your criteria for what is "worthy", they most certainly fulfil a role. Not one they have a great degree of option in having to fulfil.

You, however, take the opposing view based entirely upon what comes across as a somewhat bitter position. You have presented no information to support the basis of your opinion, however you state it as "fact" when it cannot be.

If you truly didn't care about whether they were more "privileged" than you then surely you would be less voracious in your condemnation of their contribution and indeed very existence?

An opinion doesn't make you right. It doesn't make you wrong. Its just that, an opinion. If you can't understand or at the very least accept that that then you are deserving of being accused of lacking in intelligence.

And Jeff, if you can't take the odd insult (and lets be clear here - you've insulted the Royal family more on this thread than you have been insulted by any contributor to it) then perhaps you should reconsider your approach to posting on here

Nicely thought out thread...let's take your last point: the royals aren't posting on here, so any insults are moot. I can take insults with the best, I just feel that a) they add nowt to the discussion and b) show a lack of any decent argument from the insulter...a bit like playground insults.

Anyway.....

I've rewad your evidence and refute it. If I could be bothered I could turn up the same "evidence" showing that they are the bunch of takers I've labelled them as....as Martin would say: "Google it yourself".

I could also find evidence for all SORTS of misdemeanours........but still you lot worship the ground they tread on.

They are no better than anyone else in the UK...and far worse than some. Yte we pay £millions for the privilege of calling them "Your highness". "Bull...sheeit Mr Hand Man..." as Williams** would have said.

Here endeth the lesson.
