I believe, with no evidence to back it up, that this debate will either run forever or end, but the outcome will be the same, we will never agree. Which is a good thing,

Can you imagine how dull it would all be if we all thought the same way, as long as we have respect for others opinions without agreeing with them (with a few excretions) then it can't be all bad.

The exceptions are;
STI is better than WRX
Arsenal are better than Tottenham
Marmite is better than Bovril
Out is better than in
Chas is better than Dave

Ok, off topic a little, but bored and the other topics didn't inspire me

Loz, read this thread again - watch the videos I have posted

Science does not have all the answers, unlike religion, it does not claim to

But it provides (and has provided) a framework to move humanity from sh1tting in a cave to sending a probe to Pluto and the universe beyond

Religion can NEVER do that, it simply does not have the apparatus - it is the end of mans enquiry not the beginning

Science (again shorthand for critical thinking and rational thought) does not get everything right, it admits it's foibles, it makes the odd mistake it is self correcting, but crucially moves ever forward. In the end **** science simply does not work

Oh science deniers make hay over the minor disagreements in the science - but the central narrative remains robust

it gets there, it is the best chance we have

Don't let dogma and superstition leads us to hell

That's why they say- "Keep up, old bean! "

If not, attract another 27 pages with doughnutting around, and keep saying - "Are we there, yet? ".

Problem is what you've just described covers the majority of the populations experience of science. Unless you've actually been directly involved in the experiments/observations, all you have is the second hand evidence based on what they documented (much like religious types).

I personally believe the universe started with the Big Bang but the only evidence I can provide is the documentation of others.

We've covered this in this thread already though. True, I have not been to the moon, I have not done genetics, I don't a particle accelerator etc.

But, I could, if I had the resources, or the drive, repeat those experiments. I can also read different accounts of the same experiment, I could build up a picture of what is correct by cross referencing. The bible is a single source, it has no contemporary sources to support it. Other texts of the time are in contradiction of it.

The Big Bang obviously we cannot ever see it , but we have seen stuff from very close to when it happened, we can re-create conditions even close in the LHC.

None of the above can be said for religion.

The false dichotomy of science v. faith. Don't believe it kids! You can have a rich spiritual life and an understanding of the world around you via the scientific method. The scientism of Geezer, Bulldog and Hodgy offers only the latter.

Romans 1:25 prophesied:

"They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator who is forever praised."

Thing is you're applying relatively modern scientific reporting principals to religious scripture which is several thousand years old. You can't write it off as invalid just because it doesn't align with current good practice.

But I have a rich "spiritual" life, based on my understanding of the wonders of the natural world around me - as described by science together with my deep loving relationships with my family and friends

It's written off because it does not conform to observable reality

It's a good story though. I've never said everything in the bible is factual, just that some of it maybe.

Seriously?

If I was a materialist I would not have had 5 children, and I would not have wanted my wife to give up her job to look after them

You really do talk some utter s##t,

If science proved that God exists then that fact will be accepted by me and all the other "physicalists"

If science somehow proves that God doesn't exist then I don't believe for a second that all the "spiritualists" would be so ready to accept that fact

The way I see it is that ghosts, leprechauns, bigfoot, aliens all MAY exist but until such time that it is proven then why would I choose to believe it? That would be completely illogical. Like I have said before It actually makes me sad that u would waste any amount of ur short time on this earth praying for me.

The fact that you would do that suggests you believe praying will make a difference, it won't. Do you honestly believe it will?

But the get out of jail free card is that not all parts of the Bible are meant to be taken literally, so who is to say the fact that God exists is supposed to be taken literally?

Hodgy, if you understand what you understand, merely on the star dust level, then you are a materialist. If you start understanding what you understand on transcendental level, you can become a spiritualist.

A spiritualist is something quite different. Anyway, supposed to be doing the dishes.
