I assume the model of your car is a GX (i.e GX, Sport, WRX, STI) and the GD-GG is the subaru code for the model year variants (i.e classic (Mark 1), bugeye (newage or Mark 2) blobeye (new age or mark 3) hawkeye (newage Mark 4) and so on)

Your car, a bugeye, was made from 2000 - early 2003.

Edit: what Neil h said.

Thank you neil-h ... I'll go and look at the VIN plate and see what that says. I did feel about 2 years old when I was told "they didn't make hatchbacks!" All I know is that it's just like a hatchback ... the back seats fold down and it's nowhere near as big/long as my friend's Volvo estate but is just a little bit bigger than my old Golf.

Does this help? I can't look at the VIN plate ... it's inside the engine and I can't lift the bonnet as it's completely jammed (hence the start of this post!)
I really am grateful for all your help today - I've been on a steep learning curve after drowning the last few days!

OK - they have phoned back and they do have it!! That's the good news! The bad news is that they aren't open tomorrow as it's half term week and they are short-staffed! The earliest I could now go is Weds (due to my commitments) But they will hold it for me!
I so wanted my Scooby to be fixed early next week ... :-(
But at least it's not a boy-racer bonnet and it's in silver already!

No - I asked. He did offer to bring it to London in about 10 days time when he goes to collect a car coming into Southampton Docks (which was nice of him) but I really need it sooner than that

Think you might struggle to find a sport bonnet, perhaps try to ring some subaru breakers. WRX's are going to be alot easier to come by.

Just out of idle curiosity, what inspired you to buy the car?

A friend who was a car salesmen for Merc had it come in as a part-exchange (3 yrs ago) and my car at the time kept breaking down. It was 40,000 miles and less than £1000, with year tax and mot. I needed something - he said it was a good buy, so I got it! And it has been really good, I really like driving it but (as I'm sure you can tell) I don't know much about it!!

Don't really know until the bonnet is released but the mechanic who tried to release it said he thought it was just the strut at the front had pushed back and that it should just "spring back" or be able to be pulled back into place. He didn't think there was any other damage ... fingers crossed!!

I think you should maybe hold back a on buying a bonnet until you know the full extent of the damage as it could be more serious than you think and a mechanic who cannot open a damaged bonnet but then says the strut may be pushed back but will spring back etc. sounds odd to me and of course this will be costing you so maybe a new car would be the better way out.

A new car is out of the question - no money! The speed at impact was about 10/15mph and certainly looking through the grill at the radiator etc the mechanic is fairly sure there is no other damage. The total cost for the bonnet will be about £150 -I can't get a car for that. It's a risk I'll have to take... but thanks for all the advice and assistance.

That automatically elevates you to 'expert' status on here.

If the bonnet is trashed the mechanic may be able to cut it open.

So the strut at the front that is maybe pushed back is not the suspensoin strut.

And I've looked through pages and pages on the forum you've suggested - my problem is I don't know what I'm looking for - all I know about cars is they get me from A to B, and I don't know anyone who knows any more than I do.
I have one sitting in my garage now. Only problem is its white so would need to be sprayed.

I think the mechanic meant the bit that the bonnet latches into, although he said he might just be the bonnet itself (& catch) that's moved back and not much else. I'm just hoping that when he gets it open it'll be good news.

Yes, he did say he could cut a hole to be able to get a hand inside to release the bonnet. He says he's done it a few times before. So fingers crossed it works!

Hope it all works out and my apologies for getting the wrong end of the stick and thinking it was suspension strut damage.Good luck.
