Have a 60plate STI Hatch, mapped by Andy Forrest to 340bhp. Absolutely love it

I’d love the JDM 2.0 but the price for a good one is twice an average UK car?

To be honest the engine isn’t too much of a worry. It’d be a case of suck it up and build a 2.0 if it went **** up. Honestly, if I did buy one I might even just start looking for an engine to build up over time as I’d be keeping the car a long time.

I just can’t think of another car I’d rather have. I’ve never even driven a hatch sti but assuming they drive similar to the older models (I’ve driven up to blob sti) I don’t know what it is about subaru but they really just suit me the way they drive and feel. I tried the Evo thing years ago (many times) as they’re the ‘better’ car but I dislike the feel of them, very light controls and I’d always miss the Impreza feel.

There’s nothing new that interests me really. It’s all got a sort of disposable feeling, you pop the bonnet on modern performance cars & it’s all plastic and could be anything apart from a badge. I hate all these screens in new cars as well, give me a dial and a ****/switch over any stupid touch screen too! I can’t even believe these latest cars are even legal honestly, they talk about not touching a phone & manufacturer’s make it so you’ve got to look at a screen to do what should be a learned reach and twist/press.

I always thought one of the 2.5’s issues was movement on the ODB with the thinner cylinder walls being able to move and compromise the head gasket compared to the 2.0?

As said, just needs to be speced right. Closed decking isnt alot of money in the grand scheme of a proper build. Mine was built as a 500bhp daily, just need a few more supporting mods to bump it up that far.

once you have had a well built 2.5 going back to a 2.0 is a bit of a let down lol ,, sold my hatchback and after a long boring story I ended up with 4 Newage STi's in various specs from standard to just under 400bhp and none of them feel as good for the road as the 2.5 did ,,, its not about how quick they feel its just about how they get there lol

All great points
I know the Ej and relaibilty don't exactly go hand in hand
but stock for stocknits gotta be the jdm
then the jdms are way more expensive to begin with so it prob evens it self out cost wise

i know the 2litre twin scroll is less laggy , but i had a 2litre jdm sti wagon , it was a great car but i hated the lag on junctions and roundabouts , nothing nothing then mental lol , it made it hard work getting out of junctions , a lot easier with a 2.5 mine being a fsti, even with less power but still much quicker than the jdm sti , but way more torque in the fsti

aside from the fact that the 2003> JDM 2.0 cars have the same 'chocolate' spec pistons as the 2.5.............currently have another Spec-C engine in for build due to ringland / crank issues

You've gone through 4 in 6 months odd? That's just greedy!
I'd very much like to try a built 2.5 to compare with my Spec C, and no doubt I would probably prefer the 2.5 motor, but as a whole package, would it compare with the spec c chassis, with every STI suspension extra on it, plus the jdm rack? I think it's apples and pears for me.

At the end of the day it will come down to personal choice, the 1.5 will have more grunt lower down a d less lag, but wont rev as high. Which to me is a better setup for a road car.

Track cars run at higher rpm all the tome so lag isnt an issue

Tbh, my 2.0l is very linear compared to the 2.0l blob wagon that I had, with virtually no lag. But it is not a car for long motorway journeys because it begs to be shown roads with bends.
Domino, a 400hp 2l would never compare with a 530hp 2.5l though.
Anyway, to the OP, the gist of it is that just about everyone who has posted on here has rated their hatch, both built 2.5 and 2.0; they are better cars than their predecessors, and simply suffered alot of hate for being such a radical departure from the previous shapes (and the engine failures)

I think you missed my point ,,, for me the 2.5 drove loads better and my 530bhp 2.5 had less lag than any of my current ones ,, and that includes three uk ones and a Jdm Sti all having been mapped and one being just nuder 400bhp ,,, it was just very surprising really after driving around in the hatch for many years and then getting back into cars running a lot smaller turbos I thought they would spool better than they do lol,, but they all feel like proper lag monsters lol

but yes over all I think the hatch is a much better car and would happily own another forged one

iv gone though a few more than that in the last 6 months if im honest lol ,, I sold my hatch , my blob and my classic rally car so it more replacing the buying more lol ,, I brought this 4 all within two weeks of each other lol ,, managed to get a classic type R ,, a uk Prodrive bug STI ,, JDM Prodrive bug sti ,, and a widetrack blob sti ,,, so got a nice range to play with lol

This is what I meant about the 2.5 though. I wouldn’t want to be getting deck’s closed and hoping. I’d have more faith in a 2.0 just from my current two car’s. My bugeye WRX is on 145k now on original engine, starts instantly and sounds like a sewing machine it’s so smooth. It’s also been running a VF29 for the last 3 years. Oil change every 6 months (it’s always been maintained)

And I have had a 2.5 years ago in my Type R sti that someone put together with cosworth HG’s, ARP, P1 heads etc.

These days I’m less interested in custom modding.

I get that they can be made decent but IMO you’d have to spend big to have it done right and then it’s one of those money pit situations where you start thinking... I may as well do a turbo, injectors, clutch, blah blah.

Give me a well maintained 2.0 JDM hatch at 320bhp and I’d have way more faith in it lasting 150k miles than a put together 2.5.

in what way is closed decking and hoping? very rare you will find many modern subaru's with that much mileage and still on the standard engine, uk or jdm.

Out the box the 2.5 is a nail due to weak points, but built right its a great engine and no less reliable then the 2.0 assuming if its built properly.
