How many people have actually considered the practicalities of stricter border control?
Many people are going on about Australian style border controls, but how many people have actually been to Australia and considered what that would mean to the UK?
Australia, like many other countries, requires that ALL international passengers (yes, also the Australians) fill in a landing card which you have to present to customs on entry. Each card has to be read by the passport control (and remember this also applies to Australian citizens returning home) which often takes a great deal of time. Depending on which boxes you tick, this can lead to mandatory luggage searches and so on. I've been to Aus three times and each time I've spent about an hour going through immigration. The US is not much different!
Then, consider you also normally have to fill in a departure card when you're leaving the country too! For some countries, departure cards are only required for foreigners, but still, its a massive amount of work and causes queues and delays for all passengers!
Now, delays like this, we can normally put up with when going on a week or two holiday, but can you imagine the hassle when you're doing a day trip for business? Also bear in mind, any control we put on EU residents, the EU are likely to force similar controls on UK residents arriving in the EU!
Now, you're probably going to say, Australia has such a system, why would it be any worse for the UK? Well, take a look at the numbers (note, these numbers are international passengers entering the country and don't include transfer passengers):
Australian international air passenger numbers
UK international air passenger numbers
So, Australia had 35.6 million passengers arriving from international flights in the year upto March 2016. The monthly figure is between 2.5 and 3.5 million passengers per month. Very few of those passengers will be staying for less than a week, with many staying for a month or longer.
Now consider the UK. In 2015, there were over 210 million passengers arriving from international flights, of which nearly 137.5 million passengers were from the EU. Many of those EU passengers will be business travelers staying for only one or two days and often the same people travelling on a regular basis.
Now imagine how much more time and effort, not to mention cost, it will be to control our borders in the same way as Australia! And remember, this is just the flight data! How many people arrive by ship in Australia? I'll bet not very many! How many people arrive by ferry or the tunnel to the UK each day? I've not looking into it, but my guess would be not far off the number arriving by plane!
Now imagine you're a foreign business person that travels regularly to companies in the UK. How enthusiastic do you think those people will be to carry on doing business with British companies when its so much hassle to travel there?
My guess is, the UK government won't introduce such strict controls on EU arrivals, but then you're not getting an Australian style system and not getting what you think you voting for in the referendum!

What a poor reason not to have a rigorous immigration policy, you have to wait a little
I cant think of a worst person to represent the 'Remain' campaign in the final days before the vote, Gordon Brown!
It just shows how the remain campaign leaders have become so toxic to the public, they have gone and hid in their bunkers whilst pleading with Gordon Brown to lead up the last days. If he was so influential, remain would of used him weeks/months ago.
Now the question is, who is next after Brown as he is already being laughed at in the media after less than 1 day?
You normally play your joker player early on

But all these little reasons add up to a big turn off for business to invest in the UK.
The company where my wife works is pan European, all these little things are a huge turn off for them. I'm sure they are not alone.
For most companies now, the drive to increase profits is mostly about driving costs down. This is the exact opposite Leave means. You'd be amazed how much all these little things cost to big business when you put them all together.

People are referring to the aussie immigration points based system , not the way they handle people coming into the country via their borders. two different things

But surely you realise that even with some wonderful points based system, you do actually have to have more physical border controls to implement them? If you want to stop people coming here who are not supposed to, you are going to have people on the ground. Lots of them.
Or are Leave going to appeal to the sense of fair play of people and expect them not to come to Blighty because we don't want them to?

Maybe some of the money saved from the EU budget could go into completely over hauling our border control. Its a big job as currently it is a shambles. I mean, at the london olympics they even lost a few athletes
#1630
Don't worry, no one will want to come here, we'll be a third world country anyway! People will be complaining about the amount of UK immigrants!
#1631
Of course I know we would need border controls, we have them already. I was stating that the argument was about immigration policy not border controls per se. Yes they do go hand in hand as mentioned.

Sure, all that EU money that isn't actually £350 million a week, is going to pay for all the extra border controls, continue to subsidize the farmers and fisheries, continue to fund regional development, continue to fund Scientific research, prop up our pensions until the post brexit economy recovers, fund all the training to get all the unemployed professional dole claiming Brits back into work, completely fix the NHS and I'm sure there will be enough left over to pay for a big party too

yes the mythical 350 million we save
will cure all the problems of the country - Gove and IDS have brilliant history of investing in the countries infrastructure, especially up in the frozen north where the wildings live
and unicorns will roam free in the beautiful countryside
I do believe in fairy tales - I do

After all Boris is a well know Scunny lad, graduated from the local grammar school, his heart firmly in the North East
We elites in London and the SE will be crying into our prosecco

No, I was offering supposition as supposition!
Or perhaps you were refering to my earlier post where I offered passenger numbers for Australia vs UK as fact backed by official statistics and then offered supposition about how we will achieve border control?
And of course the leave campaign has never tried to offer supposition as fact! You know, like stating that all that money will go to the NHS and we WILL be able to negotiate better trade deals than we already have! Or perhaps by simply leaving the EU we'll immediately fix the immigration problem!

I met up with some old uni friends a few weeks ago. Amongst the group was a neurosurgeon, a GP, an actuary, a lawyer, and a finance director. Every single one of them said they were going to vote Leave. So much for the leave camp being uneducated bottom feeders
Now, how do I go about blocking Martin and JTaylor?

But what is more demonstrative is that between 1997 and 2010, the number of jobs in the manufacturing sector shrunk from 4.5 million to just 2.5 million (source: "The Slow Death of British Industry: a 60-Year Suicide, 1952-2012" by Nicholas Comfort https://www.amazon.co.uk/British-Ind.../dp/1849544638 ) this is whilst we're IN the EU and for the most part NOT in recession!
