DrEvil, bunch of SGI employess broke away from the company and created a new startup. They laid the foundations for the N64 graphics core. Nintendo then bought them out and gave them the job of designing the Cube's system.

From a technical achievment standpoint its supposed to be a very competent part by all acounts. Its not far behind X-Box's Nvidia system for performance, but crucially it costs a fraction to produce, which, I suppose, is why GameCube can retail so low.

Mega stream that does seem very strange I've never ever heard of that before and we've got a lot of xboxes in the office. Are you sure they didn't just give you the same one back?

homer, when you pop round to collect spiderman (when?) ill show the xbox and pc side by side.

You can compare halo on a 25" screen against unreal 2003 then decide if a pc (in there current format of graphics cards etc) could do halo exactly like the console, the answer is no when you spend somtime and notice lots of little differences.

It may take you a while of playing it, but imho its THE best fps game bar none.

Am still crossing my fingers and hoping for a decent and challenging cube game, luigis had stunning gfx but finished it in an evening and following morning session

From the money I've saved not upgrading my PC in the last 4 years I can afford an Xbox and a Gamecube - lucky really 'cos the PC can barely run Wolfenstien (the original) never mind something like Halo LOL

Unfortunately I only managed to play for about 30 mins last night as I got back late and then was out again playing 5-a-side footy.

Played Rogue Leader which looks great. Manager to get passed the 1st level (Hoth with the AT-ATs) then onto the level where your in the X-wing fighter protecting the transports convoy - seems quite hard to orientate yourself as the Tie fighters are very fast.

I like the size of the console and the controllers look gimmicky but fit my hands really well without being big and chunky like the XBox ones.

From my limited experience the XBox graphics look a lot better (Halo mostly) but thats only one game.

Yep Adam - had a quick crack whilst I popped home for lunch. Just glad you still had it for sale as I thought someone else would have snapped it up.

P1Fanatic - re Rogue Leader, the first level is the Death Star, then its the escort transporters in space, then the third level is Planet Hoth.. think Adam may have got that far hence you have access to it..

We've been playing Super Smash Bros Mellee more and more, got 2 characters so far and an extra level.. still working on getting more stuff I'm stuck on the Planet hoth level on RL, but only had a couple of attempts at it.. Haven't played Luigi much, but got to the second part, ie. got 3 of the boss ghosts.

I'm ummin' and rrr ing about Pikmin, think I'll wait for Turok Evolution, due out soon alledgedly, EB have reserve your copy advertised...

XBox definitely has sharper graphics, but the Cube has a more console like feel about it... I think some of the games will out shine the Xbox on the Cube, Soul Caliber II for one..

Well after the footy yesterday I played all afternoon on my mates Xbox and then a few games on my new Cube so heres my views.

Graphics - far better graphics/speed. DOA 3 is amazing with the effects when you fall in water or crunch around in snow. Halo is great although I didnt like multiplayer as controls are too awkward.

Controllers - prefer the gamecubes, they feel more natural whereas the Xbox ones are bulky and the buttons in awkward positions (and my hands aint small).

Games - definetely a lot more 'big' titles on the Xbox. Ive got Sonic 2 Battles and I can see why Sega let Nintendo have it - its pap. So is Burnout but to be fair it was naff on PS2 as well.

I thought Xbox wouldnt be as good with the little multiplayer games but played Fusion Frenzy (Only £18 on Play) and we were hooked all afternoon. Definetly a title to own if your mates are always around as it shows how competitive people really are.

The Cube Graphics on Luigis Mansion are breathtakingly good and shows that the Cube has the power to produce great graphics which is good for future releases.

Future - I want the Cube for titles like Mario Kart but If Im truthful the let down of the N64 was lack of game variety and I dont see the Cube changing this. MS have too much muscle to allow this to happen with the box.

So as much as I hate to say it the Xbox is the better buy IMHO.

Simon.

Nintendo learned their lesson the hard way - GameCube is apparently a dream to develope for compared with the N64, so it won't suffer the way N64 did.

"Games - definitely a lot more 'big' titles on the Xbox. Ive got Sonic 2 Battles and I can see why Sega let Nintendo have it - its pap. So is Burnout but to be fair it was naff on PS2 as well."

Sega write games for whatever platform they choose. As for 'big' depends what you mean - there's tons of EA games for X-Box but thats a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. Alternatively, if you mean quality - I'd say both platforms suffer from a lack of AAA titles. X-Box has HALO, Cube has Rogue Leader.

"So as much as I hate to say it the Xbox is the better buy IMHO."

Probably down to the type of games you play - so everyone will have a different opinion. I say as a general rule for everyone - try both.

Question

Morning all,

Sorry, I don't have time to search for the answer as I think this has been covered before... but...

I'm thinking of getting a GameCube (i have a PS2 already), but wondered :

- Should I go for GameCube, or should I consider the X-box

- I hate Micro$oft products and try not to buy anything they produce due to the lack quality and reliability, IMHO.

- theres a 70 quid difference in price on the consoles... is X-box that much better...

- I'm not bothered by online gaming, so this part is a plus / consideration..

- I want Rogue Leader 2, saw it on Nito's gamecube yesterday, looks awesome. Is this due for X-box release?

What have you lot got/recommend??

Cheers, Alex

Question

Mike - cheers mate.. some good points... I might get both at some point...

I think the main thing is, I defo want Rogue Leader 2, and I have always been a fan of Mario and the like...

Sounds like you haven't found any issues with XBox reliability wise, which is good. Although I hear there are potential problems with the Western Digital harddisks that Xbox uses, they aren't known for their longevity (sp!)?

I might wait on the Xbox, and get it later when a) the price has dropped and b) a few more titiles are out - I don't like games like Halo much and haven't seen any other game I'd want to buy it for...

I supose I'm answering my own question.. but, will StarWars be out on Xbox soon?

Alex

DazV - cheers for the info, I think for now the PS2 and GameCube are best for me, hence I've just bought a GameCube (took a while to track one down!).

PHolt - Think I'll wait until Xbox has more games that I like... I'm not a hardened gamer, so if they are slightly easier on the GC thats probably better for me!

Well, just got a GameCube, cos I had to have Rogue Leader for the death star level.. and Mario cos as much as I hate those cute games, I've always been a fan on the Mario series.

The guys at Dixon sorted me out with the best deal, £201 for a GameCube, Joytech xtra controller, Nintendo memory card, Luigi's Mansion and Rogue Leader 2 - very pleased..

Alex
