Its a funny/strange phenomonen. And I think it stems around people only noticing certain cars/drivers that attract their attention.
I heard on the radio about a bloke whose daugter was killed by a wreckless driver that was racing a Mitsi Evo. He wants cars like the Evo, Sti, M5 Focus RS banned. I say the Focus RS, as in his interview, which was quite candid - he didn't seem stupid in his knowledge of cars, he stated that he has yet to see a Focus RS being driven about sensibly.
Why vilify the Focus RS and its drivers?....I wish I could put it to him, that the RS has a five cylinder engine and are often fitted with a aftermarket exhaust. This makes them immediately recognisable just by noise alone, much like an Impreza with unequal headers or a VW VR6. You could run it through 1st and 2nd and back off at 30mph but in doing so attract attention due to the noise and flashy spoilers/colours.
Meanwhile someone in a Picasso pottering in 4th/5th could cruise past at 40mph in relative silence. The Focus gets the attention, but the Picasso is ignored even though its speeding.
Its this reason why I kind of like average speed cameras...they are indescriminate on who it targets...except forward facing ones which don't work with bikes...doh!

Another incident - I had just been into town on a Friday afternoon to the bank. I went around a traffic lighted roundabout, the lights turned amber as I got to each set and a silver focus came through behind me. We left the roundabout and headed down a road, the focus turned left and disappeared. I continued driving for a mile or so, then I saw a police car catching me up with the lights going, I moved over for it to pass and it stopped behind me. The copper asked why do I think I was stopped. I said I hadn't got a clue. The copper said they saw me go through 3 red lights! I think they saw the focus go through 3 red lights, put the sirens on and tried to catch up, the focus disappeared, then they saw my car (black blob with monster graphics on at the time) and decided to pull me and try to pin it on me
I fought my side and went to court, both officer statements started by saying 'As I approached the lights I applied the brakes' both coppers said they were driving! One said traffic was heavy (false), the other said there wasn't much traffic (true), both said my car was blue with gold rally graphics Neither saw the silver focus behind me
All charges were dropped, but I couldn't claim any expenses , I didn't have to pay a fine but lost £150 for my days wages + fuel + parking + all the hassle. W4nkers

Natural chicanes are created which slows the traffic.
One slight flaw to this process, getting the old bill out to patrol the village and enforce it. And thats it it actually come under their jurisdiction

Some good idea,s there , thanks, At the next village meeting , we are going to put forward buying the road (only small) and turning it in to a toll road, that will stop the speeders .

If the route is a short cut for somewhere, it will cut down on the traffic from joe public. But people who may have more money than sense will use it - along with there expensive, flashy, fast, sporty cars. Mentioning no Clarksons (sorry i mean names)

Having just returned from a holiday in Mexico - they use something called 'Topes' which are the mother of all speed bumps - they have several of these on roads leading into and out of every village - they are evil things - any attempt to go over them at more than 5mph would remove the sump fairly effectively & swiftly from any vehicle.... I kid you not....
And boy do they work....
Especially fun at night when they are unlit

Just a traffic sign outside the village with a picture of a Vauxhall Corsa in it and a line through it

Last Monday we were driving back to Wiltshire from viewing a property in Bristol. Didn't know the route very well and ancient Satnav had a mind of its own. And it was super foggy! Got on the correct B road eventually and then hit a village with ROAD CLOSED signs right across road but not a Diversion sign in place. Wondering what the hell to do I asked a local walking his dog how we could get to the other side of the village. He just said ignore the signs, drive around the cones and we would be fine. Told us closed signs had been there for weeks. So we went through without problems but no speeding traffic and pub car park was empty.
So that's the answer but I think this could only happen in Somerset
dl
PS. Volunteers with yellow jackets aiming a hair dryer is possibly one of the better solutions but it won't stop locals - then it's number plate scribbling.
