Thought the same about Matts comments, surely if your journey in 1 direction is 75% downhill the return leg must be 75% uphill thus making an average MPG, but of course Matt may well have a trick he knows about where he cuts out the hills and uses just flat roads.I can get 200mpg when I drive off the edge of a cliff

I ran a type UK hawkeye STi for 3 years as a daily driver, mostly motorway driving and out of town and got 32-34 mpg all the time as long as you stayed off boost.
Cruised at 60mph
(only once) on a cruise across Europe to find best possible mpg and got 38.4mpg 472miles from one tank. 
But could get it down to 4mpg at the track!
That just about sums up running costs.

It's all about personal choice and you sound like you are going in with your eyes open. I have run a Bug Wagon for around 10 years. Totally practical and the most reliable car I've owned, hence why it's still here. It runs at over 400/400. It returns 20ish mpg driven sensibly, a lot less when not. When it was standard, the fuel economy was not that much better. It's my only car, although I do use the wife's Freelander 2 when I cannot be arsed changing gear. It done some huge trips around the UK and fits my 2 labs in the back with ease! Buy one with huge service history that's been looked after and you won't go too far wrong. All cars have their weaknesses. At the end of the day, these cars are not too expensive to buy. However, buy a modded one and the costs add up. I've spent over £3000 already this year on brakes, body and suspension. That was just keeping it in tip top shape - basic maintenance. Buy with your eyes open and you won't go wrong. Good luck.
I've run my current and previous STis as daily cars since 2012. Current one is 475/440; it's no worse on fuel than the previous 380-odd one when pootling around / not giving it death.
I don't find driving them all the time takes anything away from the experience, in fact every time I drive my car I smile just from being in it... The only downside has been the Ver 8/9 seats, which are awful. (Have rectified this with a Cobra bucket seat
) Newage WRX seats on the other hand are supposedly excellent.
Fuel economy is of course laughable, but you're aware of this anyway.
