Fat Thomas is [sometimes] a PITA, but says a lot of stuff that other people daren't say. The look of the hatch is a personal choice, but the poor reliability and the high tax of the 2.5 are proven
IMO I like the look of the STI hatch (I hated it for years), but I don't like the WRX hatch. I wouldn't touch one that hasn't been forged by a reputable company, or it would have to be bought for peanuts and spend extra to forge it so I wouldn't be worrying everytime I put my foot down.
A late blob wagon or JDM hatch would be the better choice

As already mentioned just buy a forged one or have money put aside to forge it IF it goes. I have forged 330S and it is a brilliant car! I've had a blob wrx and classic V3 sti, and this is a far better car. It ticks all the boxes you mentioned. Dogs, bikes, track or family trips and stick a set of winter tyres on and it will go anywhere. Yes the styling is marmite but I really like it. To me it's like a more modern lancia delta with the big arches but much cheaper to run. You won't be disappointed. Don't listen to tubbytommy he hasn't owned a Subaru for years, don't know why he is still here!

It's not really irrelevant when the OP has asked for opinions on the hatch from people who have owned one and first person to reply slates them but has never owned one ,,, slating a car based on what you have heard or read on the internet isn't really a good base for info really and seeing as he has never owned one that's where his info is coming from ,, gone very quite now he has been asked what Scoob he drives though lol ![Thumb](images/smilies/thumb.gif)

Stop slating the car for the £500 a year road tax, it's not the cars fault but the government/EU directive on emissions

Hi did not mean it to sound so vain. Just thought I would let you guys know that I think if maped correctly oil changed every 40000. I think we Stand half a chance. But still a weak engine that should have bin looked at more by Subaru when they first started going wrong.

I think it could do with changing a bit more often than every 40,000 miles 🖒
I think it's more to do with each engine rather than how well it is looked after. A few of standard engines have failed at less than 40k miles. No mods, never red lined or driven hard and always shell v power.

FWIW, I was speaking at length to service manager at a large Subaru dealer in the north of England last week. He told me that prior to 2010, they had a stream of 2.5 engines going bang - even on low mileage cars that had been pampered. Several every year. Post 2010, not a single failure - not one in 5 years. He's certain that Subaru altered their map post 2010. He's unsure whether there have been any subtle mechanical upgrades though.

They kept the 2.0 twin scroll for themselves.
