I would say 145 is too high. Oils in most engines are at their optimum at around 105.

Andy, missed that one, but FWIW ...

Cruising temps in winter : about 80°C
Cruising temps in summer: about 90 to 95°C
Idling after normal drive: going up to 100°C
Pushing it on normal roads : about 105°C max
Pushing it on track : highest I've seen is 115 to 120°C after being out for more than 2 hours.

Removing the splash guard lowered temps by about 5°C, but that may be due to the position of the sensor (sump plug). I think Bob Rawle saw a similar thing (can't remember the thread)
Using RS 10W60 again both lowered average oil temp by about 5°C & increased oil pressure slightly.

This was all pré-FMIC, no data on current situation yet (apart from normal driving, temps seem to be the same)

Thumbs up

Thats good news Theo Looks like an (additional) oil cooler isn't really necessary then. Most oils are happy at that temp AFAIK.

Nom's results seem a bit high though ?

They're actually a little lower than Theo's I think, or vary less anyway.
Cruising temps in winter : haven't had one with the temp gauge yet
Cruising temps in summer: about 90°C
Idling after normal drive: going up to 95°C
Pushing it on normal roads : about 95°C max
Pushing it on track : only just got the brakes sorted
The 145°C is peak as recorded by the gauge - I don't actually see anywhere near that figure when driving. But why it is there in the first place puzzles me - my intention (but I keep forgetting ) is to reset it, drive about as usual, check the peak after the drive & if it isn't registered as that high check it again at next startup. If it's high then, there's either some serious heatsoak coming from somewhere, or an electrical spike causing the reading... (this is with the meter reading even when the ignition's off).
Well, it gives me something to do, anyway

nom, just a hunch but
or an electrical spike causing the reading
would be my bet really.

Your temps don't seem to be very different from mine (once you sort yer brakes ), I don't trust those gauges up to 5°C's anyway, and I just don't have the gut feeling oil temps on the Impreza are way off the scale.

The "doughnut" (oil/water cooler) seems to work quite well, and we probably would better be monitoring water temps than oil temps. From what I gathered in reading this BBS for 3 odd years now, we don't need oil coolers at all in most states of tune.

I admit though that this is pure speculation as well, but I just don't think the engine failures are due to high oil temps. Pressure problems... maybe.

I also think the frail MAF's are scewing the numbers quite a bit... I am now conviced that the MY99/00 MAF's just die after 3 years, and are the reason for quite a few engines going haywire. But that doesn't explain the failures of people running Link/Motec/GEMS etc...

What we should concentrate on is the "just serviced" bit IMHO. I don't remember Bob posting any stats, but it seems to be a major issue. Maybe you missed that post, but my dealer had *exactly* the same thing. Serviced his own car on Saturday, went bang on the Sunday...

But Evil, cars with MAP only systems go too, and the MAP sensor is unlikely to freak out.

Paul, correct, hence my "But that doesn't explain the failures of people running Link/Motec/GEMS etc..." bit.
