If the Brownlee bros had put their arms over each other's shoulders and crossed the winning line together would they have each won a Gold?

Just seen this on the news.
US swimmers lied about being robbed.

Very strange.

From memory (though i could be making this up), they talked about it for London 2012 and were told not to on the basis it could constitute race fixing.

Indeed they have.
But why/how have they acheived such spectacular results?
Is it because they don't have to contend with quite so many drug infused Russians?
Or is it because their opponents haven't been able to perform at their highest level for some reason?
Or are they (as we might all hope) just so dedicated to the cause that they can rise to the top just at the right moment and they are genuinely good enough to excel on the global stage?

Whatever the reasons for their superb acheivements, our atheletes have put on an awe inspiring show of extraordinary performance in a wide range of disciplines that hasn't been matched by any other competing nation (so far).

It is reported to have cost us around £350 million to do this so it's not been possible without substantial investment. But, hang on a minute, won't we get that money back in the first week that we leave the EU?

Well done Team GB.

The investment in athletes by UK Sports and its satellite bodies only kicks in once individuals have moved a long way up the achievement scale and are competing at a very high, or elite, level. Before that they are entirely on their own financially, and this is the catch especially in the specialist sports like shooting, cycling and sailing where the equipment costs are very high and largely have to born by the competitor.

The attraction of state sponsorship is possibly an incentive for competitors to strive for excellence but the majority will never see a penny of this money, despite having invested a vast amount in cash, time and effort.

Where the investment makes a huge difference is when an athlete hits the heights and they are absorbed by the system and funded. Then they are exposed to the best coaches, the best traning and become professional in every sense of the word. This is exactly how the Eastern Bloc countries used to operate back in the day, and that's what separates GB from most other countries at the present time.

Very well done GB, and it's certainly not been handed to them on a plate.

what is so refreshing about our success, is that we have simply let the results do the talking

compare it with the World Cup or Euros - in the run up to these we are treated to endless media copy and press conferences talking about "belief" and "believing" - as if that make any fvcking difference

it is just meaningless b0ll0x rhetoric - and we all sound so surprise when we put in a pathetic performance – maybe we did not “believe” enough

I see this cr4p all over the place tbh – at work and over the Brexit debate too, such utter nonsense – belief should be left at church

Self belief (which is what they are actually talking about, not some religeous experience) is the most important aspect of training and without it you're doomed to fail.

Media hype and the need to fill column inches or TV hours does much more harm than good imo. Peoples' expectations are artificially elevated and if the predicted results are not subsequently forthcoming everyone is left with a sour taste in the mouth.
Everyone that is except the media, who have made their money.

sure, I agree but that is not really what I am talking about

and it is not what the media et al talk about

it is this concept of collective belief

I agree that nationwide belief has no bearing whatsoever on performance outcome or England would win the football world cup again. Two chances of that happening: very slim and none!

Corny I know but part of the pleasure is hearing about many of the GB athletes, how ordinary they are but driven by real belief, hard work and a lot of hope.

The schoolgirl who persuaded her parents to take her to the pool every morning for training before school etc etc. I especially liked the Somerset farmer who won the Trap Gold but then had to get back home quickly to help with milking

yes a good point - behind every success story there are the parents and family making sacrifices

I have memories and personal experience of this as my elder brother played in the Chess Olympiads for England in the 90's

Not too many hang around until the end, even if the BOA is prepared to pay for you to do so (not guaranteed).

You know somebody who has won an Olympic gold.
