For a fair few people 40k on a car is nothing, let alone £350.

When they buy 90k car and then replace it a couple of years later taking a 40k+ hit £350 wont even cross their mind

Behave yourself, if you're that tight you shouldn't be buying a 40K motor in the first place. Way too image conscious by the sounds of it.

By registering my new car one week earlier I've reduced the 2-year VED bill by £665. Feel free to call me Fagin...please.

We're talking new cars here. Once you look past the utility and the performance and consumption, there's almost nothing left but image.

Maybe, maybe not. But you can't assume that people who are prepared to slash out on themselves are going to be happy about making unnecessary donations to the Exchequer.

And in any case, most top-range Range Rovers (which typically sell at around £90k) are sold with diesel engines. So the owners can get a few more miles to the gallon, presumably.

You don't get rich by splashing cash, which is why most are probably leased, pcp or a tax write off, at least that's the reason I bought a new car, computer, stock etc when I had a business, I wasn't going to just give the government my hard earned.

When I had a few quid (once upon a time) the reason I went for a diesel 4x4 as opposed to V8 petrol (which I really fancied) wasn't so much the cost of fuel... it was the time and distance between fill ups... I'd have spent half my life looking for petrol stations and being in them travelling across europe... filling up every 150/ 200 miles is a ball ache when you're trying to do a 1300 mile trip in 24hrs... which is a big enough ball ache in it'self... I could have lived with it the rest of the time as I don't do loads of miles.
