I was prescribed Tramadol. it gave me hallucinations...very real ones.
Two involved seeing my mother.......long dead. It was more than upsetting, because your brain doesn't say, "Hello? i'm having a hallucination".
It believes what it sees.......and the mental pain afterwards was intense.
So I will no longer take those.
What I can't get my head round is that folk who don't really know pain, only others' pain, are making decisions that should ONLY be taken by those actually aware of what it's like to be in constant pain. In my case, nine years.

A few others I know have had some real bad experiences off these hardcore pain drugs there must be a better way to relieve the long time pain related illnesses...

If nothing else it may well make him a happy bunny... which would be nice.
Personally I think he just enjoys wallowing in misery... there are aspects of theological medicine that suggests your mental attitude leads to illness... I'd be inclined to agree...
All that p!$$ and bile can't be good for you... Positive mental attitude and all that.

Try telling a long-term depressive to "Pull yourself together."
Do you think it'll work?
